Bluebolt TBM

I have a little pale Bluebolt that is about 5 months old and overnight it's colur has started to intensify -not much by other peoples standards but there is no escaping that it is a Bluebolt now. Is that unusual for them to colour up all of a sudden? It seems happy enough wandering around as usual scavenging food etc , the WP's are all fine but it worries me that it is happening so suddenly. Only change has been I am slowly lowering the TDS as it was a bit high but it has been a slow process over a couple of weeks. The other shrimp are all looking really good, colour has improved on them all and molts are appearing so it may be a response to better water conditions but i'm still a bit worried:worried:.

The colour in mine have intensified with age and sometimes quickly soon after water changes! But I have had a couple that have done the overnight change and the new colour has stayed from there! I wouldn't worry but that's easier said than done!

Thanks guys . I was impressed and worried at the same time. It's not very blue but I'm happy to have a couple in the tank.

Love to see pics......the BB's colour intensity is certainly affected by WP and age...as a hi mentioned, if they're cruising around and eating, then that's always a great sign :-)

It's very pale by your standards BB. But I will try and get a picture tomorrow :)

That's ok ineke....I'll get a tad drunk then, my standards always drop after a few....lol

BTW, love ALL BB's ..... You'll find by getting the right Mg:Ca ratio, and with age, their colour will intensify.

I will need to do calcium tests again , last time I did them it was all ok but now I have the new tanks things might be different. The mother was a Snow White Mischling who had a BB Dad - she is one of Ninja's girls I bought last year and snowy white I can't believe she is a Mischling. Pretty sure dad was my Panda. There are a few little white ones starting to show colour this week - must be the lowering of the TDS and extra water changes that is setting them off.

What tds are you aiming for? If I can ask?

I'm bringing it down to 150 it was 180 but my TDS pen is reading lower than it actually is apparently. Eshrimp brought his super EC/TDS wand here and mine read about 40 ppm difference ie mine was 40 lower so my TDS was even higher. Then I bought another pen still not high end but better than I had but it reads the same as my cheap one so I'm a bit at a loss. However today I measured BB's water - before anyone says anything the water the shrimp came in- it was 153 by my pen and BB had said his EC was 330 I think.

Just back from a spot of shrimp staring. I'm amazed that I have more Pandas than I thought - I think they have come out to see the new kids on the block- but also I have thought I had a blue shadow Panda from when it first hatched but I hadn't noticed a shadow panda for a while. Tonight it was there and it's in the same tank as the BB so something good is happening in that tank perhaps the lowering of the TDS plus the extra water changes have something to do with it.

the GH has come down a bit now too and more moults are happening.

good sign ineke :) and congratulations. i visit friend house and check his tank water for CRS TDS was 675, GH 11. but he says its breed allright and no deaths? how ever the tank 1 year old. wonder how they can survive? although the crs grade either low grade or because the wp the colour was lose white abit

CRS are a bit hardier than the TB's especially the lower grades but a lot of people have success at higher TDS. I had deliberately increased mine but had poor results so now I'm bringing all my tanks down again except the cherry tanks which sit around 200 .

Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.
