Gday all does anyone know if shrimp "piggy backing" is a sign of eggs being fertilised? The female (on bottom) is heavily saddled so im hoping so :) or is it wishfull thinking ?

The mating of shrimp only takes about a second, the male catches the female does the deed they both flick apart. Shrimp piggy backing for an extended period is not mating I'm afraid, I've seen it a lot & I'm still not sure exactly what it is they are doing. :encouragement:

I usually see them piggy backing when they have recently been caught and transferred and cant find any plants or structure to hold on to.

They could also be cleaning the other ones shell. I caught some shrimp out of my pond the other day and was amazed to see algae growing on the shrimp :yikes:

Great to see a berried mama congratulations. One thing you can say about Rilis they hold an aweful amout of eggs- sometimes it's funny watching them waddle around trying to tuck errant eggs back in.!

haven't heard much from you lately how is it all going? What have you got now? lots and lots of tanks yet?????

Thanks yeah it is a rather large batch. I see what you mean she has got a real "waddle" cruising around. Iv been a bit quiet as i was devastated twice once with the heat in WA and unexplained the second time :( but iv just got a few reds and the rilis. The rilis i got from BB as culls to test my new 55L and they have really grown on me so im going to try and improve the quality with these guys :) oh and iv got 1 sneaky male tibee that came with the culls so when i get some funds im going to get me a female for him :) your room is looking great i wish i could set up a room LOL but i would be happy with a small rack

Those rilli may colour up better if you perhaps add some mineral powder.....the pattern looks good, just need to improve the colour. Post a pic of the Tibee, and I'll get a matching mate for you....kinda cruel for me to give you a male, without a mate :-)

thank you my room is great and as I can't work at different heights I don't mind not having a rack. If i was a bit techy I guess I could sump each side- i have a few spare tanks that might be able to be adapted but they would still need to be low and i just cant do that.

Sorry to hear about your losses it's a Bummer when that happens. let me know if you need some rilis I can send you some but looking like your female may give you enough to play with.

BB you are a tease with only giving 1 Tibee- :whip:

Ron signed a contract where the 1st Tibee was free, and he had to buy the matchi Tibee for $1k.......though it was a win win situation ?:rofl:

The pattern is pretty good but like you said these are going to throw some nice youngins anyway so i will see how i go. I will wait till this tibee gets a bit bigger to be sure that it is a male :) thanks heaps for the offer you sir are a legend

That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.
