LPH & HOB suggestions for 100 litre Red Cherry Tank

I would like to change the corner filter in the 100 litre tank I'm setting up for our RCS and some plants, but there's a lot of different views out there. The minimum standard seems to be a minimum turnover of 4 times the tanks volume in a community tank, but what about for shrimp? When the tanks ready we'll be putting in our RCS, plants and, depending on how they go, add some other types of shrimp. I've seen some people recommend going for a lower lph so the flow isn't as strong for shrimps, is that a general rule? I'd like to run a HOB with a bio sponge over the uptake and an air driven twin bio sponge filter as well. Should I go for around 400 LPH and can they be ran with standard filter wool and the ceramic bio stars I have in my cannister filter instead of activated carbon? I don't like using activated carbon due to the problems it can cause. And lastly is it worthwhile getting one with a protein skimmer (I'd cover it with some stocking so the shrimplets don't get sucked in)?

I run hob filters with intake sponge covers aswell as single air driven bio sponges on my tanks , the water is always crystal clear

3 of my tanks are 60L and I run the Aqua one Clearview 300 on them ( recommend up to 80L tanks ) I got them for $25 each

I did look at the clear view 500 the other day for an up coming project , recommend for tanks up to 120L and they where $45 , can't remember the turn over per hour but google should tell you that

In the 300 I have ceramic noddles in bag , 2 strips of filter wool and the plastic bacteria plate ( i don't use the cartridge supplied they are pretty useless ) , the 500 is much bigger so you should be able to put heaps more in.

I find the flow ok with my shrimp , they seem to like riding the flow

Cheers Twelly

I'm a big fan of over filtering & 4 times per hour turnover is the absolute minimum I would go. Don't worry about the current cause the shrimp will just hang out where they are comfortable, my tanks run about 8-10 times per hour & they still hang out in the open. Instead of carbon I use Purigen as it is way better. :encouragement:

Forget about a protein skimmer for freshwater as they don't work, purely meant for marine(saltwater) only! :D

Thank you :-)

I was thinking of going for around 300lph due to what I'd read, limited space, cost and I'd like as much hardware out of site and taking up room in the tank as I can. But reckon I'll go a minimum of 400lph now.

I didn't know that about protein skimmer, only read that some peeps have them on their filter. On our 125lt community tank we were running a 1200lph external cannister, but it was poor cheap quality and after having 2 spring big leaks in 6 months, talked the other half into spending a bit more when I found a better quality 800lph canister filter for $20 more at a closing down sale. The shrimp do seem to enjoy 'riding the flow' in there & 2 RCS in particular can often be seen racing laps around the sides of the tank, one way then back the other way, riding or challenging the flow lol.

Hahaha, yeah I love watching the extreme shrimp, the daredevils are too funny! I posted a vid of one of mine hanging on to some Subwassertang while directly in the flow, he does it all the time, till he gets blown off the climbs back up into the flow, absolute nutters & I love it!! :victorious:

I thought I had lost a few tibees even cleared out the tank looking for them...about a week later I decided to change the filter floss in my HOB and saw something darting about. i removed all the media into a jug of tank water and sure enough tibees! They had climbed up the waterfall against the pressure and lived in the HOB for a week+ in that heavy flow! Gets me thinking if they prefer the flow? Had to lower the tank water so there is now a gap from the waterfall of HOB...

Lol. Starting to think it might be a good idea to see if I can find a way to make room for a bigger filter. Not much room in or around the tank and no where to put an external canister filter as the shelves under the tank aren't very high.

Gave in to impulse and brought another 20+RCS for spare change at a fish auction yesterday and watching them when they finally got to be released was a laugh and a half as they fled their bags and investigated and played in their new temporary home and checked our other RCS.

Found a little external canister filter that actually fits on the shelf in the cabinet. It's only 300lph, but it holds a surprising amount of bio media, which I took out of the corner filter in the tank and the external canister on our main tank. I've set it up with the spray bar, which I'll probably stick with, but I can change it to the diffusion nozzle later if I want to. I've also ordered a twin sponge filter suitable for tanks up to 95 litres so I'm hoping this will be enough. If it isn't, I have another sponge filter I can use as well and our air pump is more than powerful enough to run both. Atm I'm only using the sponge from it over the intake in the community tank

Time for another update! The PH this morning is 6 and KH 0-1 (you can't measure zero obviously). I plan to check everything tomorrow and then a water change on satuday. At the moment the TDS is 190 which should drop to 170 after a water change and then 150ish after the following/next weeks water change. Last time I checked GH it was 6, but again I will do ALL the tests tomorrow. I had to resort to using a PH/KH- product (AQUACID) to get to where these parameters are now but as the water I use has PH6, GH0 and KH0 I assume/hope I won't need to use that from here on, but will see if the parameters stay stable for the next week and have a PH alert disc in the tank which should indicate any significant change. I don't like using these sort of products as a general rule and wouldn't if there were any shrimps in situ and that product has raised the TDS at about .5TDS per drop. I may well order some blue bolts towards the end of next week (the road to the house will be closed for a month from 3rd June so it is next week or wait another 6 weeks) and see how that goes. I plan to drip acclimate them overnight this time so as to not rush that as it shouldn't get cold indoors overnight anyway this time of year. This all depends on the tank parameters staying stable for the next week (aside from the mentioned TDS adjustments with the water changes), though the GH  may drop a tiny bit with using just RO to reduce the TDS but that is fine, and even could be a bonus. I did manage to find some nice floating plant that I had before (good old ebay), and will try and get a photo of that at some point to attach, Azolla red I think it is called? Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed for now but all appears to be going well at this point! Snails seem to be doing well at least.

That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

As at time of this post the SL Aqua is available from this UK website, https://gbeeshrimp.co.uk/product/z1/

Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?
