New shrimp room one step closer

Look what arrived at my place today. To say I am happy is an understatement and I am now one big step closer to the beginning of my new room. I have a benefactor ( well 2 really) without whom this wouldn't be happening so quickly nor would I have been able to start with 8 of these beautiful little 2 foot tanks. I can't say much more about that side of it at the moment but will say watch this space. Next step is emptying out the room to be used and adding my bespoke bench around the room. Lighting is still under discussion but hopefully LED lights will be installed above the tanks. Heaters are on order , some substrate ordered but more needed, sponge filters on way, pumps are all sorted. I still need a lot of moss but that will come and then a RO system installed to automatically fill a holding tank and pump added so no more emptying of buckets of water and hours of filling bottles with RO. I feel like I am dreaming but it is truly happening, Alan just has to find time to get started for me but he doesn't have a lot of work on so it won't be long. More pictures as things happen

Thanks guys I didn't think this was going to happen until next year and then it was going to be with my mismatched tanks that I am using now. I already had 2x24" tanks with black silicone waiting to be used but now it will be 10 x24" tanks all looking the same. I will still have my big tank with my rainbow community shrimp in it and I have a big decision to make about my TB/ mischling tank. Not sure if that should go in the room or if I can use my canister on one of the smaller tanks to put just the TB's and female mischlings in and use another tank to put any male mischlings in with a few Crystals. Plenty of time to think about that. BB I will pm you about the heaters thank you.

Way to go girl, I will have a look through the mountain of things I have laying around and see if there is anything of use to you.

Are you running a system or separate tanks??

Hi Bob I'm running individual tanks trying to keep it all simple. Electricity is not an issue so running pumps and heaters for each tank is not a problem. I will eventually get that RO system semi automated so I don't have to lug buckets of water all the time but setting up the new tanks will take priority. Hopefully Alan will start late next week and the bench shouldn't be a major problem for him but as each tank will weigh approximately 70kg he needs to make sure the load is spread evenly over the floor. It's very exciting to finally get this happening and will look nice having all the tanks the same. :D

Ineke I have lots of old Box filters if you want them, I am going to a system and foam filters, let me know. Or I can look at my buying price on foam if you want?

Thanks Bob I use the sponge/foam filters in my tanks. I can get the double sponges for $2-$3 each and find they work really well , I use two per tank and find that also gives me a good water movement too. I also have one big internal power filter that I modified to run with half a sponge and a bag of purigen . If any tank gets a bit cloudy I run the internal filter for a few hours and it cleans them up really well. I try not to over populate any tank so the the sponge filters cope very well.

No bad is when you have double garage 3tanks high all walls full and 3 back to back rows in the middle and single file standing room only.It takes 18/28 hours to do water changes dep on time of year.

I will have 3 extra tanks plus they will be bigger than all but 2 of the shrimp tanks I am using now so I need to think what I want to have in them.

I hope you kept those lovely big tanks. In the past when I had fish I ended up selling nearly everything I had and now regret I didn't keep it all. I am keeping most of the tanks I am closing down but I have to be strong and not set them up to use again and that will be hard.

Nice one! Can't wait to see pics :)

We emptied half the room today as Alan is doing one side at a time. We are going to look for some wood for the base tomorrow but then I will be away for the rest of the week ( hope he makes one side of the bench to surprise me, that would be so good) he could easily do it in one day but next week he is working 3 days so not sure if he will make a start.:D

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
