One of my older chocolate girls died last night. She was a big old girl rarely not berried and even died heavily berried. I was expecting it but still not nice. Can't save the eggs as they are too young. She gave me some beautiful shrimp. Now I'm going to worry about the others I have they are all the same size and I got them at the same time.

Oh no! That's a bummer, it's never good to loose a shrimp, especially an old favourite. I had the same thing happen about a week ago with one of the first CRS I ever bought, Big Red, as I called her, didn't look good one evening & then nek minit :( I'm sure she had a good run as I had her for about 2yrs & she was very fruitful for me. :encouragement:

No doubt I will need to get ready for more losses as I have a lot of very large older shrimp. I think they understand, my old chocolates are always together-I got them all at the same time from Dean- they are the ones that line up for dinner:) anyway where one is all are except this morning only one was in her usual place near where the girl had passed away. Once I took her out of the tank they all came out of hiding and are scrounging around together again. Wishful thinking maybe but I want to believe it is so! Now I have to be more careful about separating old shrimp ,then what about taking there babies away:cower: Nah just kidding but it does make you think- maybe I watched Nemo too many times LOL

Any idea how old they are?

Hopefully that Choc will be replaced with more babies from other shrimp to minimise the loss.

I found 2 CRS dead in my tanks last 2 weeks as well. But I also found 5 teeny little babies (that I could see anyway), that's made up for the loss.

Oh she has left a very large family for me so in that way she wont be missed but as one of my first "good" shrimp she will be missed. It's never nice when you have a loss . I have been very lucky over the last couple of months and have not lost any of mine although 3 new shrimp didn't make it.

Thanks just have to toughen up and accept it especially as they live for such a short time.

It least you know she passed, my Female BB has gone and done a disappearing act on me...I have no idea where she is. I can see into every part of the tank and have searched thoroughly so she is definitely gone. It's like someone has come in and netted her away...I think she has just molted and been eaten by the others...

My biggest frustration in this hobby is when they disappear on you!

Thats so frustrating the not knowing. I have had a few Tibees disappear but I think they went a wandering even though every gap was taped:(

that was frustating. but last night i had even frustating, 1 of my pregnant fish on breeding box, i think jump out about 1 meter from the aquarium and i did step on it! btw keeping shrimp is more like keeping guppy fish easy breed and easy died :(

Thats so frustrating the not knowing. I have had a few Tibees disappear but I think they went a wandering even though every gap was taped:(

You must have felt terrible when you stepped on her. Actually guppies are very hardy and one of the easiest fish to keep . My only problem with guppies was they just kept breeding :). Once you get your conditions right you shouldn't lose too many shrimp:encouragement:

it was terrible ineke :( yea guppies is easy to keep if not get parasite, i have difficulty rescue them when parasite spread arround. my shrimp is doing okay :) Good luck ineke!

You must have felt terrible when you stepped on her. Actually guppies are very hardy and one of the easiest fish to keep . My only problem with guppies was they just kept breeding :). Once you get your conditions right you shouldn't lose too many shrimp:encouragement:

      Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

      Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?

      One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.
