how many shrimp in a breather bag

I have been using the large breather bags so had no issues with the number of shrimp I was putting in the bag but now I only have the small size and wonder how many shrimp I can safely put into a bag? Is there a guide?

I don't know if there's a guide but I've sent twenty in one of the small bags & they arrived safely, I wouldn't like to try any more than that though. :encouragement:

I've had 30-35 in the large breather bags and had no issues. Express post, but in the cooler months. With summer just around the corner, I would add a ice block for insurance.

Thanks Jay i thought about that too as I have received a few more than 20 in 1 small bag. How important is it to double bag? I have always double bagged but have received shrimp in single bags without a problem. It looks like for each shipment I do now it takes 6 bags for 3 lots of shrimp =I might need to go back to using bigger bags again then it's only 4 bags per shipment

i have purchased ice bags so that won't be an issue It's the double bagging and extra bags for the smaller bags that I purchased. Hopefully I can move some of the excess shrimp when I sort them then I won't be moving them on in summer. I will just have to buy my own lot of bags next time and get the bigger ones again

It's funny I have 2 tanks that are slow to breed and 6 tanks that never stop. When I send of my orders tomorrow I will have to go and hunt down the males and take them out -a) to give the girls a break from being constantly berried and b) to let me actually sort my tank properly without heavily berried mamas being upset and C) getting the babies big enough to move out. Is there a pill for shrimp:p

Ineke I have sent 80 Zeb's in 1lt of water in a NON breather bag and only about 1/5 lt of air yes 1/5 air that was so it did not slosh and give it away there was shrimp in there and yes I have done it many times, so I think you are safe to put bigger numbers in Breathers, OH and if you double bag with breathers make sure they are dry because they don't work when they are wet, also put cardboard in between the bags so they don't touch as that stops them working to.

I did send Rainbow fish to Germany in Breathers with the cardboard inbetween the bags and had no issues. that was 10 x 2.5cm fish to 2lt.

OH if you are sending them don't feed them for 3 day before they go and that will make the journey better for them, no one krappen in the bag.

Thanks Bob that makes me feel better. The other issue is the double bagging but I guess for now I will continue to do that until i know for sure single bags are OK.

My opinion is that it also comes down to the variety. Ive received 50 red cherries in a breathable bag approx 1lt. In saying that i cant imagine anyone shipping 50 oebts. Mine were juvies and id think probably halve that amount if they were adults

I use Kordon breather bags (Large size), andhave never found it necessary to double-bag shrimp

I have successfully sent (express post) up to 50 cherries in each large Kordon Bag with no problems on a number of occasions.

Wouldn't add more than 50 though ......

No sure about the smaller bags as I've never used them ..

I think it also matters where they are going. If its capital city to capital city so overnight probably could send more than a 2 or 3 day trip ti a reginal area

One thing I forgot Ineke is do NOT do them up tight if they get dropped or throughen and they do. the bags will bust do them loose as in squeeze the air out and tie it at the top so it is floppy that way there is give in the bag when the IDIOTS through our parcels.

Thanks Bob I have learnt to do them up loosely but had not thought to make a "handle" will give it a go tomorrow although the boxes I have are quite big this time and may not be able to .
