Gday - Blue mountains to alice springs

My main interest is in keeping and breeding shrimp to feed my perch in my Aquaponics.

I grabbed 60 glass shrimp and threw them in my sump that grows duck weed and Azolla as feed about 3 weeks ago.

No clue beyond that so l hope to learn a lot more here!

Hi and welcome to SKF well that may be the strangest reason for joining our forum yet. If all you want is a food source for your fish then cherry shrimp are the easiest to keep and can withstand a variety of water parameters. If you are not setting up a tank specifically for shrimp they may not breed as quickly than if you have the right water parameters for them. This is definitely the place to learn about shrimp just ask questions and someone will be able to help you. The forum will open as you post so the more you post the more you see. Hope we can help you start your shrimp keeping hobby.

Thanks for the welcome!

I guess this is the place to ask my first questions!

Currently my glass shrimp are in an IBC with 500L in it with Azolla and duck weed growing in the surface.

The is also a bit of algae growing on the sides of the tank.

The shrimp initially were eating tracks through the algae but for a couple of weeks I wasn't sure they were still around - they are bloody hard to spot.

My current tank temp is around 12C and has no aeration or refreshing of water.

Are they likely to survive and breed in these conditions or do I need to make some changes?

I get the feeling it is going to be the gateway that opens up to a whole new interest. Just like Aquaoponics opened up my interest in native fish!

Looking forward to the journey.

Lol, you don't know how close to the truth you are dude, these little buggers are incredibly addictive & MTS(Multi Tank Syndrome) will definitely be following soon :victorious:

Yes I'm afraid it may be enough to ditch the fish and open multiple shrimp tanks. If you actually were to catch a few of your shrimp and put them in a tank where you can watch them you will be intrigued by them . They are busy and entertaining but I guess if they are just fish food you won't want to hear that:p

Firstly welcome to SKF! My mate is doing the same as you only to feed to his Saratogas...If it is numbers you want then I suggest you heat the water and add some sort of filtration. My mate started with 50 now has hundreds maybe even thousands...His are in a large IBC tank as well...so if you want them to breed like machines I would heat the water to around 20 deg and chuck a large canister filter to help with the filtration. Yes there would be costs but the food source for his fish is endless and lets face it nothing better then live food for free!

Haha that's exactly what I've done for my perch and red claw. That is, Put a couple of them in a tank inside so I can watch their behaviour.

I'll have to get onto free cycle and gum tree for some more small tanks!

:)

Right then! Next chance i get I'm going to hook it up to the solar heater i meant to connect to the main heater and haven't got into action yet!

How long ago did your mate start with 50? Or how long until he had enough to supply the fish?

it only took him a few months to get to the hundreds as once the conditions are right the glass shrimp are breeding machines! Now he has enough for his fish and even to sell as feeders to the LFS...

You could be right!

Just bought 2 small tanks through gumtree ...

Contacted another that was selling a shrimp set up plus 5 tanks (he didn't reply) ...

MTS bring it on!

That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.
