How do you wash your hands?

How does everyone make their hands shrimp safe?

I work in a wood yard handling treated timber which has been coated in copper chrome arsonate (lovely sounding compound) And have pretty much resorted to not touching anything...

Adjusting suction cups with a pair of tweezers is becoming a pita.

Any chippies or the like out there? How do you clean your hands?

Also as a smoker how do other smokers deal with it? Im always paranoid about putting my hands in the tanks after a ciggy.

I gave the ciggies away a few years back so i dont have to worry about that.

I normally wash my hands with soap to get contaminates off then re-wash/rise them really well with just water. I guess you could use vinegar and then rinse well?

Yeah I wash with soap at work but the only soap that cleans off all the crap is pretty nasty smelling stuff itself.

Unfortunately without my job I deffo wouldnt be able to afford to study in sydney and probably wouldn't have shrimp...

I know I gotta quit the ciggies... that will happen eventually...

I got as far as thinking about gloves... full arm gloves never even crossed my mind though...

if they are for medical use be careful as they will have a steriliser or a anti bacterial residue on them

They look kinda like full length versions of the gloves I used to use for fibreglassing.

I think they were just straight plastic without the additives. But as you have mentioned garry I will be careful...

Probably just going to stick to my extra long equipment to keep my hands out.... ahh well by the end of it I should have the control/ precision with the tweezers to catch flies ninja style...

Haha' date=' me either! I thought it was radiation and not chemicals, and i hope so because i've been using sterile gloves for feeding because i've been covered in silicone, paint and putty the last week. Not sure if they're all the same either.

Oooooh, do not want. Had to touch my toes for an army medical once, so VERY glad it didn't end the way i'm thinking it could've now.

I think for OH&S issues most sterile gloves will be radiated (otherwise the chemicals would leech into people who have to wear them constantly.

I work in a medical research facility and there are soooo many different types of gloves that have been treated in different ways. If i had to pick one to use for shrimp i would be going for catering/food grade. Also be very careful to not use powdered gloves. IMO the ones that are being used above are not medical as they would fit much more snugly, perhaps they are vet gloves.

Pretty sure they are vet gloves for pregnancy testing cows and horses and unblocking constipated faeces a load of crap really:encouragement: sure as hell would run if a doctor asked me to open up wide if he had them on:sour:

Why don't you were gloves at work when handling the treated timber.

Smoking.....easy, smoke with one hand, put the other hand in the tank. Lol

I refuse to wear gloves when working with machines... seen too many horror stories from gloves getting caught and sucking the hand in too.

I have been taught how to smoke by a quadraplegic without touching the smoke so I might have to resort to that when I wanna play with the shrimp.

Ok you didn't say you were working with machines, I had a cousin-in-law killed that way. If you are working with a machine you don't need to handle the logs then.

I would suggest a surgeon type scrub of your hands when you get home and a pretty thorough rinse in straight water.

How does your friend smoke then, lol?

      That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

      Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?

      Right now this tank only has blue bolts and golden bee (red bolts?).  The eggs start off all brown, but at the end, I notice that some are kind of a clear pink-ish color.  So I don't know if that is the egg color of dud or golden bee.  Picture of shrimp only about half hour before molting. The water is always RO + remineralizer, so it should be ok. The tank seems to still be on a "good streak" ever since I started the regimen of weekly water change, monthly gravel vac and plant trim.  The point being to keep the amount of waste low and removing moss / floating plants so that the nitrates go towards growing algae.  At one point, I had three berried females, but only netted about half dozen babies by the end, due to this early molting problem.  There might be about 30-40 shrimp total in 5 gallons, but still very few full-sized adults.
