My Fishroom

Sorry if this isn't in the right place, can only see a few forums and this seems the most relevant.

So I had all my tanks and animals in my bedroom, and in order to make space for them all, I got rid of all my non-fish related furniture (were in storage), save my bed, a wardrobe (had a couple previously), and my desk. I cramped these into a corner as far as humanly possibly and tetris-stacked the tanks. Wasn't the neatest, but it worked alright.

Well my mum didn't like the set up, as she thought it was an eye sore. Said something about a health hazard or something along those lines too. My dad being a carpenter (he built our house!) made me a fishroom. I'm EXTREMELY lucky & grateful! So now all my tanks, save a 400L, are in there.

Shall post a series of photos from it being built, and get updated pics tomorrow when I take photos of the shrimp set up. Last photos were taken a few months ago so it's a little outdated.

Space is roughly 4.5m x 2.5m.

Area. Previously used for entertaining guests/having BBQ's. Dad's now thinking of extending our back deck as we no longer have the space to do so.

Inside done, waiting to be painted and outer walls completed:

More to come.

Starting to be set up inside. Smaller tanks for Bettas, 4ft corner tank (300L) are for peacock cichlids... that tank still isn't set up as of yet.

Real pain moving that planted tank. Hope that never has to be done again, ugh. Think I cut everything WAYYYY back, so it looks skimpy.

Sweet fish room thanks for sharing.

Also love the paintings, very lifelike. I also see I'm not the only one who's thought of using those old TV Cabinets as a fish tank stand lol !

Thanks guys!

Forgot to get those updated pics, had unexpected guests.

Triggs, I saw the TV cabinet on the side of the road along with unwanted items from the neighbours across the street moving. Thought, yeah... I'll take that. Needed a stand for the barracks, and it fits perfectly... plus extra shelving for more tanks! Bonus!

Great thread Sarah. It brought a huge smile to my face reading it and seeing your Dad hard at work. Don't forget Father's day is coming...

I hate to imagine all those tanks stacked in your room :cower:.. Must've been like sleeping at Niagara Falls.

Brado, I have my betta barracks ontop. Will get another photo tomorrow for you. Thanks!

Hehe, of course I couldn't forget father's day Jamie! Most people did describe my room as Niagara Falls, apparently you could hear the water running two rooms away, with both doors shut. I, on the other hand, never noticed a thing... just got used to it after the first month. Still have a 400L in my room... that's going to be for eels come the end of the year. A snowflake and a zebra eel. My parents have said that'll be my birthday present, mum said it's a sucky present on her terms, but I couldn't be happier!

This is my 4ft tank in the lounge room. Home of a pair of angels and rummy nose tetras.. need to get some more tetras.

Outdated photos, I'll get more tonight if I have time before 2 karate classes and kali.

Last school holidays Matt (Matt_95) came down and he helped scape.

This was the before shot. Lousy looking tank, I really didn't like it.. my parents had it set up like this for the past 18yrs. After mum decided she liked my planted 3ft in the fishroom setup better, she decided to get the lounge room tank planted, too. :D

After. I've seen moved the background plants to the right, and it's grown in a little more.

Collected this... still going well.

Not really sure what this plant is? Was told it was HM... but doesn't look like it.

You new fish room looks great. I am thinking about doing a similar thing in the garage. After all a car is made of metal and should be able to stand a bit of rain

Thanks Sprae. :)

I have a bit of a dislike towards fake ornamental tanks. I had been trying to convince the parents to let me convert it for a while (their tank, but dad gave it to me to do what I wish, except scape it), turns out it worked well to plant my other tanks and compare them!

Thanks Bren. :)

My room is the converted garage, so when I had all the tanks in gave me a bit more space than a the other rooms in the house. If you can do it, do so! We have our car outside (recently dad made a carport)... it's fine, just needs to be washed a little more frequently.

Well mum likes to rearrange the furniture ALL the time, sometimes during the middle of the night... so if you get up at night time/early morning/for the next week or so at night with the lights off, you're bound to run into SOMETHING.

I think we've moved our piano three times this year. I really do not want to carry another piano ever again!

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.

Hello! I have a tank that currently does not contain shrimp, but does contain neon tetras which I am currently treating for Ich, as well as some bladder snails. Shrimp will be a later addition, likely cherry shrimp but I'm still doing research just to be sure. Initially I'd intended to buy some sort of Ich-fighting product that contains malachite green after doing a decent bit of research on it, most of which indicated that it should be shrimp-safe so I'd be good if I ever needed to use it again once shrimp were actually introduced (though I should note I'm aware shrimp can't get Ich, I'm more wondering in case the tetras could get Ich again, or something else that responds to similar medication). I ended up not being able to find any MG-containing products without either having to travel quite far or wait multiple days for delivery (which I was worried could lead the Ich to be fatal), and ended up picking up 'Top Fin Ick Remedy', a product that contains gentian violet which is a triarylmethane dye like malachite green. The bottle has two slightly differently worded warnings about its use with invertebrates ("not recommended for" and "not safe for" respectively), but when I'd been researching malachite green, I'd also heard of products that contain MG but not any other ingredients that would be harmful to inverts still being branded with warnings that they could be harmful, just as a "just-in-case" since the manufacturer didn't test it on any inverts, and I'm wondering if maybe it could be a similar situation here. I'm having a very very hard time finding information about gentian violet's use in fishkeeping at all though, it seems currently extremely uncommon. What I will say though is that I'm on day 2 of treating my tetras with it, and the bladder snails seem just fine -- in fact today I noticed what looked to be a bladder snail that appeared to be newly hatched (because of its size) that I hadn't seen before that was zipping around the tank without issue. But obviously, shrimp are not snails, and bladder snails are also notoriously hardy little guys, so what I'm seeing right now could easily be totally inapplicable to cherry shrimp. It might even be inapplicable to other species of snails, for all I know. Has anyone else here ever used anything that contains gentian violet in a tank that actually does contain shrimp? Were they okay, or should I make sure to not use it once shrimp are added?

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.
