does anyone use the DIY CO2 mix of vinegar/bi carb see post for details....

Hi everyone was wondering if anyone use this CO2 set up and how did it go....

Right with this method you have 3 bottles bottle one is a drip system with vinegar and taps that controls the flow rate or to shut off... Bottle 2 is bi carb straight up no water the vinegar drip straight on top that then loop to bottle 3 as the co2 catch bottle that feeds tank.... Reasoning for asking this is cause in theory a set up using this method you would be able to control the co2 made and shut it down safely by stopping the vinegar drip feed...

Is wondering how people went with it and did it last longer then the other method of yeast/sugar

None as I do not use it here but has read about around the traps and is wondering if anyone has tried it or using this method for their co2 as uses the yeast/sugar method atm

I have seen citric acid and baking soda being used (basically same) for DIY CO2, It comes with those DIY CO2 kits sold, can see clips on youtube

I've had mixed success with DIY CO2 so I don't use it anymore but I've never used the Citric acid/Vinegar recipe, very intrigued as in theory it should work better than the sugar/yeast recipe :encouragement:

Citric acid will work better than vinegar.

i have been using citric acid and bicarb for a week now and it is going nicely!

Im am turning it off at night with no issues so far. Will see how long this initial mix lasts for.

thinking to use this one too, not sure its worth to using DIY or buying the proper CO2 bottle. How ever is it safe to adding CO2 on nano shrimp tank 25x25cm? is it affect the WP?

I ve used bicarb/vinegar and yeast diy with that kit. Preferred yeast. Those diy kits have a needle valve to control output if you worry about gassing inverts/fish. You can also put the co2 tube into a power head to distribute co2 and put the powerhead on a timer to turn on and off with the light. at night the co2 simply bubbles up to the surface, much less change of co2 overload.

some people have heaps of success and stick with diy, some quickly move on to pressurised (i am in the second group)

I have 2 of these system that i am using. 1 bottle 100g of bicarb and 200ml water, other one has 100g citric acid 600ml of water. Going at about 1.5 bps 7hr a day switch off with a ebay soleniod. This mix lasted around 4 weeks. Via a external co2 reactor. The other at 3bps lasting 2weeks with a ceramic diffuser. Co2 is generated almost instantaniously. And takes about 5 minutes to make up a new mix. Plants pearling like crazy on the 1.5bps 50L tank. Would recommend.

cheap intially outlay and ongoing cost. 1Kg of each cost about $6 all up for the powders.

but will upgrade eventually:) hoping pressurised is under the tree.
