Eheim canister left unplugged now what?

Somehow one of my canisters had been unplugged for a number of days, I'm currently blaming the flippen possum in my garage.

For the life of me I can't think if the process to restart it. I don't want to kill all my new shrimplets by having it inject nitrates or ammonia or anything into the tank when I power it back up.

Should I take this time to clean and re establish it?

Do I just plug it back in?

Help me out here skf'ers I'm having a brain fart!

Id probably run it in to a bucket to remove any lingering debris within the tubes then hook it right back into the tank but one can never be too cautious.

By now all the good bacteria would be dead, I would not risk it. I would not start it back up until I give it a thorough clean otherwise you will probably get some pretty bad spikes, Do you have other filtration (already established) like sponge filters? If so add them to the tank for the mean time, clean the canister thoroughly, it will need to be reseeded and new bacteria to grow, maybe add something like cycle or stress zyme. Good luck.

Yeah sorry should have mentioned I run this eheim with a 2 litre prefilter and then a totto filter and 3 sponge filters on the tank so I am covered for filtration with this one offline for a while. Ill just clean it out and then hook it back up. Just like new.

Geez you are fine then...

Would have been but just discovered or caused a crack in the top outlet spigot on the eheim, swapped it for a spare, but now what do I do to fix the busted one? It's molded to the pump head, would super glue do it?

are we talking about the little outlet nipple that sticks out of the head? pressuming we are talking about the classic range.

Yep that's the one, leaking somewhere above the threaded part but I can't tell where, MIT be hairline crack. Saw a fix on the web just now using a 15mm hose clamp but you can't really get it off again. I didn't have quick connect on this one, just hose to barb, but the spare has quick connectors so ill just swap it around.

I wouldn't use supa glue, it might work for a bit but it's very brittle & will crack, I'd use Acryfix, it's a very strong acrylic/plastic cement & I got mine from an acrylic supplier :encouragement:

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
