Sudden outbreak of death

So last night i went to sleep shrimp were happy with their new rinsed feeder bowl.

So this morning i woke to i would say all my shrimp dead, so i got too it and got my test tubes out and tested everything, and everything seemed good did about a 50% water change with majority of it being water i aged and primed already due to me needing to do my weekly water change today.

i was able to remove some not all into a breeder box i had lying around just to help monitor some. Some are still fighting by moving but their never up right. whislt some look stiff and upsidedown.

Their does seem to be an outbreak of what looks to be thread algae.

So here is a question what can cause such an outbreak of death over night? what should i do with the shrimp i have left?

PS my sister jsut told me as i jsut posted this post, that she sprayed bug spray in the room to kill a roach does that have anything to do with the shrimp death?

YES, YES & YES, the bug spray would no doubt be the culprit.....WC, Increased O2 (Air Stone), Purigen, Activated Carbon, anything to purify your water ! Good luck, and hope your sis will replace those shrimps for you..... good luck, and keep us posted.

Oh dear Darktim not good at all. the bug spray probably did it- don't spray any aerosols around shrimp tanks. Also what did you wash the feeder bowl with? Should just be water and a scourer used only for shrimp tanks. Extremely sorry for your loss

Thanks bluebolts i am running anything spare i have to help clean the water. i talked to her and now she feels heaps guilty and will most likely paying for the new shrimp.

ineke i cleaned the glass feeder bowl first with tap water then let it dry then rinsed it with tank water then placed it in the tank

yeah would agree with BB and ineke would of definately been the spray. We dont even use those raid auto sprayers in vicinity of tank due to teh risk.

I lost mine to a cockroach bomb once and the tank was in a separate room lol :) learnt a lesson tho

Just an update for you guys i proably would say the death rate is at 50% - 70%, since the 80 i put in a breeder box only about 15-25 are good now but in saying so a bit of a rough guess.

luckly i woke up early today and noticed the issue if not i proably would of woken 3-4 hours later and all of them could of possibly be all dead

definately could of been a lot worst. Its a horrible feeling to see a tank full of CRS twitching and dead. Absolutely miserable!

Yeah i did was it a wrong thing to do? i wanted to get them out of the tank and also have some where to monitor them and possibly judge how they were going and make an assessment of the whole tank.

the breeder box is 2L thought it would of been a good thing to do rather then let them sit in the tank where it would of been hard to monitor them

Also its possible it was less then 80 cause some of the shrimp were struggling around at the time and kept moving to the left of hte box so i possibly would of counted them twice

Thanks for your offer i would greatly appreciate it if does come to that but i think the tank is ok atms a good number have survived so hopfully they will repopulate without any issues i just need to keep an eye out and will most likley do a smaller water change tomorrow

My mrs once wiped out a whole tank from spraying her perfume !!!

Don't mentioned this to Dean......he'll need to head back to therapy again if you remind him of his identical experience....

Wouldn't mind to see a pic of that ! That's a lot of shrimps in 2 lt of water ..... don't forget to keep an eye on your nitrates....

As the name suggests it is for temporary selective breeding of shrimp, fish, etc. not to stock and overcrowd. 80 shrimp is a very large number of shrimp for a 2L box. How long did you have them in there for? Any extra oxygen apart from the water flowing into them? I think this may have played a role in the deaths as well.

Yeh with just dripping water in and 80 shrimp in there...I would say that is not good for the shrimp, not enough filtration going through to keep up with the waste.

Alright for future reference ill keep that in mind, but also to note i would believe majority of them to have passed by the time i moved them but too the box

but ok i understand 80 is way way way way to much for a breeder box to handle

      One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding?
