breeding nets

  1. With everyone talking about satelite breeding boxes are the net breeders any good. My yellows are in with CRS at the moment as it is the only tank I had spare to stop cross breeding of colours. This is my benibachi tank so WP more to CRS liking. I have a very big net breeder and wonder if I set it up with a sponge bottom and soil like Robert suggested for his breeding box-I don't have a bar filter to do his system at the moment- would that be Ok for a while until I sort out another tank for them? I could put it in the Red Cherry tank with the right WP and maybe they would be happier. I'm still thinking of dividing the red cherry tank but it looks so nice I want to enjoy it a bit longer before I have to move some plants for the divider. Are the net breeders a problem because no one seems to use them?

My only problem with breeding nets is that the shrimp can climb the nets easily & then mix with the general population, I'd keep them where they are for now, cherries can handle it :encouragement:

dont be surprised if they try squeezing through them either.

I used one with new born baby albino bristlenose and they would get stuck in the holes and die

Ok thanks Squiggle I wondered why no one used them. I just want to see my yellows darn things!!!! My big girl and boy came out for a walk today and the girl has been saddled for weeks. I haven't seen the berried girl since I put them in that tank last week. I don't want to pull it apart looking for her and if she had died the filter is strong so she would end up by the inlet and that hasn't happened so she is just hiding

Thanks OZ net breeders are definitely out then. Hopefully when I can get out of the house I will finally pick out my new tank and then in a few weeks they can be back in a cube where they might be happier without the bright light.

Ineke, why exactly do you want to separate your yellows from your CRS, they don't breed together?

No Ninja it is because I never see them and thought perhaps they aren't happy I can now see all my other shrimp including the chocolates even though they do blend in with the gravel but they come out. the yellows rarely do and the tank they are in is very bright so I turn the light off for them part of the day, I've organised to get floating plants to help as well but I've been told by several members that healthy happy shrimp should be out and about during the day. The yellows aren't:(

if you are that worried buy a sudo box or aquamanta box and hang it on the side of the tank,

I have some of my shrimp in it but thats because they are CBS and i got my red rili blue genes in there just until they breed.

edit: look at whats a names planted tank vid when he feeds his CRS you dont see many but then they come out like a horde :)

my yellows used to always hide to and i rarely saw them, most of mine ended up dieing lol

Try doing what Robert did using a ice cream container :encouragement:

Yes Squiggle I like that idea but at the moment I don't have that type of filter so there is no way to get water to flow in the breeder tank. Any ideas? i think I just have to wait until I get the new tank setup and give the yellows a tank on their own and see if that makes them happier. I think maybe I just worry too much .The two yellows that do come out occassionally look in good health but I haven't seen my big mama one and she should be dropping those shrimplets very soon.

Ineke, if they are shy or stressed now, confining them will only make them worse. All you can do is check your water and be patient??????????

Yes I know but the WP are excellent for the CRS who are now happy and out. I can't help trying to make things right. It's in my nature to nurture. I'm not worried if they don't breed that will happen eventually- well one is berried anyway- But as I've been told there may be something wrong I'm trying to fix it. I think they are just a shy batch, I have 1 female red cherry in the same tank to see if there was something that cherries couldn't put up with and she is merrily doing her thing. It's just the yellows and maybe I just can't fix this one:(

My yellows are in with my GBs & they are doing just fine, they have just let their shrimplets out & I've seen about 20-30 at least so far, so they must be doing ok in the Bee Shrimp minerals. I have about 20 adults in a 10L tank so I think that maybe why I'm seeing so much of them. If all your WPs are good then, as usual, you're over thinking it & worrying too much, they should be fine :encouragement:

I know I can't help it I just interfere too much but they have been so shy since I've had them . All my others have been out over the last couple of days at last so they have all settled well. I can see the chocolates just barely against the dark gravel but at least they are out. I know patience leave them be but it's so hard

I was just thinking Ineke & you could get water into the ice cream container, you could have a pipe on an angle going through the side if the ice cream container & silicone it into place(low side on the outside), then have a small hole in the pipe & jam an airline in the hole so it's a tight fit, then get a cube of sponge & cut a small slit in it, then push it over the end of the pipe outside the container to stop any shrimp getting sucked in. Also you could get a small pump, like 400lph, hang it inside the tank with a hose going into the container, just a thought :encouragement:

I have looked at getting a couple of small internal pumps with the added water bars so that may be what I do a bit down the track. I will get my new tank sorted first, put my little colony of rillis in it then the yellows will have their own tank. Then I would only need the breeder tank for any selective breeding I want to do. Like Ninja said if the yellows are shy or stressed in a tank then they would be worse in a small breeder tank.

Yeah I agree, also, not 100% sure so correct me if I'm wrong but I think that Rillis & cherries will cross breed if kept in the same tank :dejection:

Umm I don't think I ever said the rillis will be in the cube with the yellows they will be in the new tank and the yellows will go into the cube focus Squiggle focus lol. I have had to change all my plans because I now have a lovely size colony of Rilis and they will need a bigger tank , I have taken all the CBS and GB 's and put them in with the CRS in the tank with the yellows as they were in with the rillis and that may have been a bit too much for that tank, the chocolates will stay in their tank, the red cherries will stay in their tank with plenty of room for any other type I may get. I know the crystals will interbreed but as they have showed no inclination to do so yet I can sort them out later. If all else fails I will have to get just one more tank. Just don't tell Alan - I got the rillis as long as I only got the one tank instead of two. So are you still with me Squiggle or did I lose you again lol

I re-read your post & I thought you said you were putting the Rillis in with the Yellows but I was just being Lysdexic, lol. I'm with you now & it sounds like you've got it all under control, also the GBs will cross with the CRS & CBS as well :encouragement:

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
