New 3ft shrimp tank

The other day I got given a 3x1x1 tank which I agreed to take on no problem. Free tank, who would say no?! What I didnt know is that it only has 4mm glass and NO bracing. Its water tight but the glass bowed so badly I thought for sure it was going to break so I quickly drained it.

A friend works with glass and I told him about it and he said that theres no ideal way to fix it. Basically its no good, BUT he can put two dividers in it, virtually making it three cubes stuck together, and brace the top. But even then he wont make the dividers the full height of the tank, to limit temptation to fill the tank right up. He said maybe 3/4 full and that would be pushing it.

What Im asking though, is if I just have cherry shrimp in it, and nothing pushing on the glass, could it work? Or is it a disaster waiting to happen? :/

If u put in a support up the top of the tank like normal tanks have then it will not bow

I used to make tanks a few years back & the dividers will strengthen the tank up enough to use it normally, you can make 2x1x1 tanks out of 4mm glass, so by putting the dividers in you're effectively making it three 1ft cubes & if you put holes in the dividers you can put a fine mesh or filter sponge in the hole & have one canister filtering the three tanks, just put the pickup in one end & the return in the other :encouragement:

As Squiggle has already mentioned, dividing it up would work fine.

Tank is done, unfortunately by time I called at lunchtime on monday it was already finished and I would have to pay way too much to have him drill the holes in the dividers since they have already been put in. So now I do literally have 3x1foot cubes.

I was looking at the eheim 2213 filters but they are a little expensive when im going to have to buy 3 :( does anyone know how I can still get good filtration but save my pocket? Without drilling the tanks?

I was hoping to have more then just sponge filters, but I may have to until I can afford canisters as well. HOB's are out because the tank has glass lids, but I may be able to move them forwars enough to let some water through. Thanks :)

What about the small eden canisters? They would be able to handle a 30cm cube and they range from $50-$70 each? Plus they are super cute :)

I've seen them, they are very good value. A friend of mine has one on her nano planted tank & it's unbelievably effective. The only thing is they don't have a tall head height, she has to have hers sitting on the bench behind the tank, which isn't a bad thing as they are pretty small & hides behind the tank quite nicely. Three of these would do the job very well & you'll have separate systems, less cross-contamination
