Hi All,

Just reading through this section and want to know if I am right in understanding that clear male RCS are to be culled? I bought my males locally from a private breeder and he sexed them all by picking out the clear ones. All my males have no colour at all. Should these be culled? The girls are all nicely coloured.

Cheers

here is a pic of my best male ATM.

males can be the worst coloured females and even better for the best quality so clear is not best. You will have to look for straight line under the tail where females will have a slight curve. Or simply if older will be smaller, thinner and have the straight tail to be 100% just keep all the females in one tank and remove them as they start to saddle.

Hi Fish4fish3

Thanks for that.I will have to set up a new tank but in the mean time I have about 5 females with saddles that are slightly darker than the one in the photo and 8 old girls that are deep red. So I guess I should get all the clear ones (I mean no colour at all) out so they don't breed? Are the clear ones of any use at all?

Cheers

The pic above is just a male... my best male with a reflection off the bottom. See the straight line under the tail? females will have a slight curve at rest

clear males are just good for food? shrimp cocktails or shrimp paste maybe?

oK I think I've got it now. The Bettas well get some shrimp for tea!!!! Thanks fish4fish3 What about the big reds they are so dark I can't tell but their shell is very deep from body to tail so I have been thinking they are girls. I will have to get some batteries for my camera, the iphone just doesn't focus close up.

Cheers

most likely girls if they are larger over an inch. if they are solid even more possible... still a very slim chance that 1 if smaller maybe a male as the painted red grade males can be pretty solid too.

sum it up 99.999999999999999% female

google red cherry shrimp grading and you should find a bunch of pics that will guide you better to what target you want. my male is still not the best that I had seen in the grading system.

Thanks again fish4fish3. I wish I could get some better pictures of my lot. I have rescaped the tank so there is a clear area in front. I will try to get some pictures but I only have an iphone 3 which isn't much cop with close up photos. All help is very much appreciated and I will google the grading to see if mine fit in anywhere. I guess this is why it is good to know where your shrimp come from . Mine come from 3 different sources although the 2 breeders are very close to the LFS and I believe they sell to him so some may be related any way.

I will have fun breeding with these until I know for sure that I can keep them alive then I will try and buy some from SKF members .

Cheers

Ok here are some not very good quality photos of a few of what I thought were my girls. They are very red so not ordinary cherries I guess. Taken with top light on.

Cheers

yes very nice indeed.

Hope you get some good looking boys for them as you'll definately only go backwards with those clear males.

I will chase those clear ones out this morning and put them in with the fish as quite a few of the girls have saddles. Now I know they are a good colour it would be wrong to let them breed with the clears. I appreciate the time you have taken helping me fish3fish4. Hope one of the reds is a boy, I'm pretty sure I have a cherry boy with a bit of colour but will have to wait and see. If I don't see the girls get berried over the next couple of weeks I may have to see if amember will sell me a boy, one of the little shrimp letters that is 2 weeks old looks quite red so fingers crossed that it might be a boy. If you can't find any males i can send you 3 or 4 spares next week if you're willing to pay the postage. They're not the best - best but will suffice

Wow thank you Roman that would be great, very generous of you. I just posted another question about trying to catch the males out with a newly berried female in there wondering if it will cause a problem . Think I will just do it and if you are sure about the boys I would be thrilled to get them. Let me know how much and how to transfer the money to you. Wow I'm blown away :cheerful:

Don't go feeding your males to any fish just yet.

have to check with fishmosey if I can send to SA first (AQIS), but I'm sure I can... Don;t think I heard anything about SA... Just something about TAS and WA? I think...

I'm moving over the weekend (9th - 10th) so better for me to do it before than after. PM me an address and contact number, I'll most likely get them out to you this week.

Cheers Roman

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.

Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
