Hi from Nth Qld Cairns

Hello everyone

Just like to say hello and check out what's cooking on this forum. I live in Cairns and there are a lot of creeks around my area. I would love to check out every one of them to see what sort of shrimps varieties are around. I'm sure there are a lot out there that are still unidentified. I must admit they certainly make a great attraction to the fish tank. At the moment I have a couple of native shrimps but I have no idea of the names. Hopefully I will find out once I get more involved on the forum

Cheers

Welcome to SKF redeye. You're in luck as we have our resident Native expert Bob aka Northboy....unsure whether you have access (paid for membership ?) but there's a section devoted on native shrimps/journals, and it's gonna be expanding..... you live in a great area !

G'Day Redeye

Great that you found this forum and welcome :). I wish I could go to half the creeks you have in your area, sadly most of my creeks around here shrivel up into dry gullies.

Hi Redeye and welcome.

There certainly is a lot of shrimp species up here. Where in Cairns do you live?

Where you live has a big Bering on what you will find, some creeks will have up to 5 species in them, not all in the same spot in the creek.

Thank you Bluebolts for your warm welcome. Yes I have heard of Bob and his native shrimp expertise. I can't wait to view his posts and looking forward to learning a few things from all of you.

Hi Baccus nice to know you are on this forum. Maybe some time in the future you could come and visit me and we will do a hunting trip together.

Hi Bob

Heard a lot about you. I'm in one of the suburbs of Cairns, Whiterock. There are a few creeks around the city area and the one I'm interested in is right near Stockland shopping centre. Hopefully with the bit of rain we have had its been flushed out and running clean water. I'm hoping to get down there in a couple of days and check out what sort of shrimps are there.

I have two options this April, go to Brisbane and spend a couple of days checking out a few pet shops and plant nurseries or go for a long drive to Cairns. If Cairns wins the coin toss then Kuranda is a must, but I would also like to get out to the Atherton tablelands. Only trouble is two avid shrimpers out hunting, who's gonna watch for crocs?;)

Hahaha no need to watch for crocs in Kuranda or the Atherton tablelands only the human types. Unless you want to wander around the Lower Barron river area then we can toss a coin as to who is the bait and who catches the shrimps. lol

Yeah I prefer staying in the non croc areas, too many around here already, more people have been seeing a couple of 3 and 4 m crocs in the CBD area of town. They have even played tug-o-war with them with crab pots.

;)I think who gets to catch shrimp depends on who has longer arms :tears_of_joy:.

Sounds like you both need a guide LOL. Besides crocs are Man eaters LOL.

Stocklands NO WAY, a realy good one is right near you on upper Anderson rd Bay view heights C. typus, C. longirostris, C. indistincta.

I use to live at Forest gardens now I am at Gordonvale

Yeh we have the odd croc that decides to live in the city drains. If we go shrimping I promise to carry a very long handled net. :D

Have you ever been to that creek near Stockland? I went there years ago and caught a beautiful dark red empire gudgeon. Unlike the gudgeons in the creeks around me this particular one was much more colourful. I want to go back there and get another one like him and check out what sort of shrimps are in there as well. I'll probably need a tetanus shot before I get near the water. Still a lot of places to explore......getting the time is the problem.
