also algae sucks up nitrates i believe

Anything that grows quicky really. Duckweed and frogbit are probably your best bet...

Thanks......have frogbits....use to love duckweed, until I got them in my tanks, and couldn't get rid to of it...

I have a bit of frog bit and duck weed in my tanks. I've noticed that the duckweed is a kind of nitrate gauge. When nitrates are really low the duckweed barely spreads. When I notice the duckweed covering the surface it usually means I have been overfeeding and/or am due for a water change.

+1 for duckweed.

Can be a pest though. So please don't chuck the excess plants into the waterways.
