Snail List for Shrimp Tanks

With the discussion recently on snails for shrimp tanks, just wondering whether there's a list of snails, preferred/seen to be perfect tank mates for shrimps. Appreciate there's a gazillion snails, but are there snails that are seen to more desirable ? Great to do a list, even ranking them due to colour/looks ?

Also, the international list would be different to our list, but nevertheless, would be good to get our international members to contribute to this.....pics would be appreciated too.

Thanks All.

Netrites are super cool little snails. They are the only ones I have in my shrimp tank, I have the aus native version - Zig Zag netrite. I havent seen many of them around in Aus though, apart from these natives. Hopefully Bob will chime in as he has some cool different types. Ill try find a pic of mine I have somewhere.

Can of worms time as there is a lot of good snails up here that don't breed in Aquariums and don't eat plants. 12 come to mind.

Some slack person is going to have to get the camera gear unpacked and take some photos isn't he

  • 1 year later...

I have apple snails in with my shrimp. They are fun to watch.

These are only babies, I hatched them out in one of the shrimp tanks.

When the snails were small the shrimp would roll them over as if they were substrate. Funny to see.

I like to keep Malaysian trumpet snails in my tanks as I consider them beneficial and the ones I have seem to have a nice white shell to them so look pretty good too.

I've also recently been moving baby golden apple snails inside if they manage to hatch in my small AP setup outside.

Ramshorn snails and some other variety seems to be infesting tanks in our house though, they've been introduced with plants I believe.

I have some nerites, not the nice zigzags ones but what I believe are called olive nerites. They are large, slow moving and well behaved in that they don't eat all the plants. I also have some of the black/ blue trumpet type snails thanks to Northboy, but so far I don't think they have bred in my native shrimp tank. I did also have some spikey shelled snails also thanks to Northboy, but they have either perished or are too damned good at hiding because I have not seen hide nor shell of them in ages.

Ramshorn snails I was being inundated by, but loaches seem to have got them under control and now the only other pest type snail I have are the odd bladder snail and some snail I got from my local creek.

Personally I don't think you can go past the rather pretty bodied Essington Snail as a good shrimp tank companion. They don't breed like rabbits, are quite sedate, eat dead plant life rather than live plants and will burrow into the substrate.

Some of my snails.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
