Hi all, I just got back into shrimp keeping after a long break.

This guy was sold as an Orange Eyed Tiger, was hoping to get confirmation.

That  looks like a green Jade with a back stripe and is very pretty and healthy looking. I would say it is a female from the shape. It should be ok for a while but if it breeds with the orange eye (or any other cherry shrimp other than green) you will likely get boring clear or brown shrimp as they are reverting back to 'wild'. This will happen even in a single colour tank as well if you do not regularly cull poor quality shrimps, but will not be as quick as when mixing colours?

Any idea what you want to do with it?

Definitely not a OE Tiger.

Looks like a North Australian Chameleon Shrimp or Ninja Shrimp.

The Chameleon shrimp can have stripes depending on it's mood, and might have been mistaken for a Tiger shrimp.

Where/who did you but it from?

It's a native to QLD, so the likelihood of finding one in your area isn't too surprising.

Interesting. My initial thought was a green jade as Simon said, but I can see how it could potentially be a chameleon. Let us know if you see it displaying any other colours or patterns.

  • 1 month later...

Just a quick update, the female pictured has bred with another male of the same.

Just spotted the fry tonight.

The female was berried but had far too many eggs than she could carry and dumped them on the foam filter strainer. Not sure if she kept a couple or if the ones on the filter hatched. There's at least 3, maybe 4 that I've seen.

Woohoo !

How exciting. The water flow around the filter will certainly help those eggs.

The duckweed can certainly be a pain!  I think the trade-off is that it is doing a great job mopping up all the nutrients

Always great to get an update! Good to see the ember tetras and shrimp are doing well still. That duckweed is vile stuff (looks ok when only a small bit in an aquarium) and so difficult to get rid of once in an aquarium and over runs so quickly?

Some things will break down quicker than others, so leaves are usually blanched or cooked first so the shrimp can devour them easier, otherwise they may need a few days to soften a bit.

Thank you!  Haha love it! Interesting my guys went nuts for the nasturtium leaf and flower and left the spinach! 😄  I have my own big organic veggie garden, so they have lots of different things to enjoy in it! I have broad beans, Brussels sprouts, peas and snow peas coming. I wonder if they would enjoy those? I also have broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Cabbage, rainbow chard, silverbeet, spinach etc. We also have 3 big organic mulberry trees (white and red) and we have a huge number of herbs too. When I saw the Rosemary flowers I wondered will they get purple or blue poop?! Haha! I also have a big strawberry tower. I heard of people feeding strawberry tops...I wonder if they'll eat the leaf? I know guinea pigs love strawberry leaves. It's now kinda become a big fun science experiment! Haha!  Haha I didn't want to say about blue poop but that's why I asked cause I want to see if they get a blue or purple poop chute! Haha! 🤣🤣🤣 It's funny, right now there is orange species of poop floating around the tank! 🤣🤣🤣
