Ooo a little competition. Good job Wayne, love the idea.

I am going to go with 15, 8, 11, 6 and 9 (because you gave us a clue as the prize is a Blue Star Campoma).

This is awesome Wayne! I'm just doing a bit of process of elimination. I only know a few of those (3, 7, 8, 9, 14, 15) but I know only one or 2 of those can be true endlers. Tough! Can we have more than one try? I feel there's probably not a huge chance of somebody getting all 5.

yes of course you can, actually I feel a bit mean making it Australia only but unfortunately we can't send livestock overseas and the people in WA and Tas miss out as well due to their states regulations.

Everyone can have a go except those mentioned above don't get the prize but I will mention you in this post.

by the way mate you got two numbers right  BIG HINT  3&9 cheers

Haha I was just saying the ones I am aware of, just took some time to right down the ones that are eliminated and which ones are definite right then, I had 3, 5 and 9 down as my P/N class ones right before you sent that last post. #10 got an immediate elimination as soon as I looked closer and saw the line of white writing at the bottom... specifically '(hybrid)'. Whoops...

I'm gonna go with 3, 4, 5, 9 and 13 as my official guess.

Cheers!

This I find very interesting but obviously as a viewer rather than a participant for the prize.

8 and 2 I have bought before as endler guppies but as you say 1 definitely wasn't so probably neither was the other. 11 really would be the nearest that I would have considered an endler but you say isn't.  6 and 14 I have seen for sale over here as endlers but assumed they aren't as they look too different and one of them you say isn't an endler so I assume the other isn't either. 13 looks like a female so that could be a curveball?

My guess 3 (given), 9 (given), 5 (1 in 3 chance), 7 and 10 (process of elimination/guess work)?

I've gotta say, this little competition has got me pretty interested. Researching deeper into my hobbies is always a good time, and it's one of my favourite things to do when I have the time... hence me spending probably half an hour of research and note-taking so far on this contest. I'm 99% sure I have the answer, after a little bit of thinking and googling, but one thing is giving me doubts - you said I only got 3 correct on my attempt, but based off my current thinking, I'm pretty sure I got 4/5.

Anyways, I'll PM you my guess and my reasoning tomorrow, can't be bothered now, and I'm not too fussed about winning - my competitive spirit just wants me to be right ?

Cheers!

Okay i'm pretty sure I've got it. You were sneaky putting the prize Endler in there! Just curious how old are the prize Endlers? Anyway I think the answer is 1,3,4,12 and obviously 9.

Hope i'm right!

Please if you have a guess from now on PM Walter so it’s still fair for others and it isn’t just free fish. That being said I hope everyone wins!

I mean, personally I would PM Wayne instead... dunno what you’re gonna get from sending a PM to Walter, but each to their own ?

Also, I don’t get how, but it seems Wayne sent jayc a public, private message. I’m totally stumped at how that happened, but whatever. Maybe if the forum hosts any more comps, we could work out a general way to go about it so there aren’t any unfair advantages? Such as ppl guessing in the same chat, etc. Just an idea. I know that I might like to host some sort of comp to give away some of my apisto juvies, once they’re grown up, just to get a few off my hands.

Wayne,

Thank you for the fun competition. That was the most fun I have had on SKFA for a long time.

I have done more research on Endlers than I would have cared to a couple of weeks ago. And I can gladly go away saying I know a little bit more than when this competition was started.

Can I ask what water parameters you keep these Blue Stars in?

I have cleared out a 2ft tank ready for these fellas. Its already an established tank, so it's fully cycled. Just wanted to get the parameters right.

Thanks again Wayne. Appreciate the generosity.

Hi Jayc,  The parameters are fairly broad:

Temperature between 22-27c

P.H 6.7-8.5

Ammonia Low-0ppm

nitrate under 20ppm

general hardness 100-300ppm

Personally I am a minimalistic fish keeper, I don't have any idea of my own tanks parameters.

I have been practicing this min approach for around 20 years now and find that the least i play with the tanks the less trouble I get ,so I only do evaporation top ups, Temperatures are usually around 27c, I only change or clean filters when they stop working, I keep plenty of plants in the tanks and have real good surface flow, I also have native shrimp ( local caught) as a clean up crew and some nitrate snails .

I have found that Endlers are a fairly hardy bunch and get along fine if you leave them to it

Cheers

Haha fair enough. I'll be dripping mine in. All of my tanks are fit for (or stocked with) endlers already, with enough acclimatisation. Even the one with a pH of 5-5.5 ?

Alright, I've done a bit more research on gentian violet's cancer-causing potential but I haven't yet done research on malachite green's to compare. But from reading the California propositon 65 document about GV (North Americans incl. some Canadians will recognize this as the law that causes some products they buy to be labelled with "known to the state of California to cause cancer", including the exact product I bought) it seems that the risk of cancer is related to internal use, either injection or ingestion. Speaking of ingestion, I think GV bans mainly relate to its use in treating fish/shrimp/etc. which are intended for human consumption, because of the above. And in countries where GV isn't banned for this purpose, it does seem to get used on various species of shrimp without causing any issue for the shrimp themselves (at least enough so for shrimp farming purposes). See the following: In February, the FDA Began Rejecting Imported Shrimp for Gentian Violet and Chloramphenicol (2022 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) FDA Starts New Calendar Year by Refusing Antibiotic-Contaminated Shrimp from Three BAP-Certified Indian Processors and Adding a BAP-Certified Vietnamese Processor to Import Alert (2024 article by Southern Shrimp Alliance) Southern Shrimp Alliance and some other organizations have tons of other articles in this vein, but I'd be here for a while and would end up writing an absolutely massive post if I were to link every instance I found of articles mentioning shrimp shipments with gentian violet and/or leucogentian violet registering as contaminants. That being said, I know shrimp farmed for consumption and dwarf shrimp are often somewhat distantly related (in fact, the one time a shrimp's species name is listed that I can see, it's the prawn sp. Macrobrachium rosenbergii, who at best occupies the same infraorder as Neocaridina davidi but nothing nearer), but this at least gives a slightly better way of guessing whether it will be safe for aquarium dwarf shrimp or not than my bladder snail anecdote from the OP.

I would hazard a guess that perhaps those eggs were unfertilized and thereby unviable? Did the eggs change colour, usually yellow to grey as the yolks used up, or any eyes in the eggs. Is your water ok, using RO remineralised and the parameters in range, as I have heard others say that if the water isn't good it can 'force' a molt? How is it going overall, do you have a good size colony in the tank, you may have reached 'maximum occupancy' as a tank can only support so many occupants.

Hello folks,  The current problem I am having is that my Taiwan bee shrimp are molting before all their eggs have hatched.  Often the shrimp keep the eggs for 40+ days.  During that time, they lose about half or so, either due to dropping or duds or whatever.  Shortly before molting they look to have about a dozen left, and then they molt with about half a dozen eggs still on the shell.  Then the other shirmp will come and eat the shell.  These last few times, I have been getting around 0-3 surviving babies per batch.  I figure I can make the eggs hatch faster by raising the water temperature more (currently around 68F, which is already a few degrees higher than I used to keep it) or make the shrimp grow slower by feeding them less (protein).  Currently I feed Shrimp King complete every other day, and also a small dab of Shrimp Fit alternating days.  Maybe I can start alternating with more vegetable food like mulberry?  or just decrease the amount of food?

Yeah, cancer risk was a thing I'd seen mentioned a lot when looking into gentian violet briefly. I kinda just figured it might only be as bad as the cancer risk of malachite green as well, but maybe I should look into it more. I've been doing a pretty good job of not getting it on my skin and also avoiding dunking my unprotected hands into the tank water while treating my fish at least, though. Maybe I'll just not use it once I'm done this course of medication anyways, because I know a store I can sometimes get to that's pretty distant carries both malachite green and methylene blue, and in pretty large quantities.
    • jayc
Can't help you with Gentian Violet, sorry. It is banned in Australia violet for potential toxicity, and even possible cancer risks. I thought it was banned in Canada as well. At least, you now know why there isn't much info on gentian violet medication and it's use. But keep an eye on the snails after a week. If it affects the snails, it might not kill them immediately. So keep checking for up to a week. Much safer options out there. No point risking your own life over unsafe products.
