CRS colony update

Back in 2014 I showed some pictures of my quite large CRS colony. At that time I was breeding for numbers just to fill a very large tank so the quality of the shrimp wasn't very important to me. Last year I decided to take it in hand to improve the quality and weed out all. The low grade shrimp. I ended with a much smaller colony so put them into 70 litre breeding tanks, added a couple of mid - high grade males and left them to it. Along the way I culled any low grade males and eventually low grade females . I'm happy to say I once again have a thriving colony of about 150-200 shrimp of mid to mid/high grade shrimp. Patterns initially were B & A with a few S and now they are basically S , SS and a few SSS . There is still a lot of room for improvement and I will be doing another big cull soon . I can see a few shrimp still have tiny clear sections but on the whole they are looking much better. I'm getting colour on the legs now too which is good. Hopefully in another year I might have more high grade shrimp image.thumb.jpeg.760522da957c145146dd228d795edd96.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.29adca82a8b891a6906e25f1871ea368.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.324a1a926f602d41cbf884a5c7150b8f.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.298ee5a201aae66693797529e2e55d0c.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.37c5c202ac890b76fa2a302300502b51.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.22da7c584778b364a51d56aeaa45cb78.jpeg

Thanks @OzShrimp I have enjoyed seeing the improvement over the years -it is worth culling out the lower grades even though initially I didn't bother. I'm cutting back on the number of tanks and varieties I'm keeping and the CRS are on the list of possible cut backs unfortunately. I'm not sure if I will keep the colony as I only want 4-5 tanks so will need to think carefully about what I'm keeping. My beloved hybrids will be staying though -they and my big TB colony won't be going anywhere for a while but the TB will be the absolute last to go if I cut back anymore,

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
