Starting with CRS

I am very new to the forum (My first post here).

I have been in the aquarium hobby for about 15 years, and possibly shrimp for about 3 of those. Now I have kept and bred red cherry shrimp, and want to dabble into the Crystal Red Shrimp.  The water here is about 7.8-8 for pH. I have read that the water in the tanks should be from an RO unit.

Will these shrimp live in the pH stated above or should I be using RO water in the tanks?  I can buy RO water by the gallon at the aquarium shop, or I may just purchase my own unit.

Also, what foods do you recommend for them?  This is the store i will be buying from:

You will find CRS don't do well in high ph. They cope much better in anything from 5.5- 7 and do Best around 6 - 6.5ph. They also do better at a lower TDS anywhere from around 130 - 160 although a bit higher doesn't seem to worry them - stability is the key . RO water is the best way to go but you must use a remineralising product like salty shrimp GH + as RO water in itself is too "pure". Generally a buffering substrate is highly recommended as well.

Feeding is not hard , firstly they thrive on the biofilm in their tank, blanched leaves such as mulberry leaves , spinach or other blanched vegetables, IAL ( Indian almond leaves) commercial shrimp  pellets , also a bit of protein in the form of either frozen black worms or black worm pellets or similar foods fed weekly.

temperature plays a big part too as they don't do well in constant warmer temperature - we aim for 21-24 C usually so in Summer you need fans or chillers on the tank to keep the temperature stable.

Regular small water changes also play a part in keeping your colony healthy. Generally 10-15 % weekly but this varies depending on size of tank and size of colony image.thumb.jpg.e2c1e4a6dd0302333912b471d3bf16e2.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.f5f70cfa2ea496f6e50112a0574930df.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.bc53cbff6ff44b768ff83490029933e8.jpg

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
