Have you done a water change recently, did you use tapwater?

Apparently there is high levels of chlorine in Brisbane's water at the moment.

I did a water change after i started losing shrimp.normally do 10 percent water change weekly

Yes, ALL information on the tank & it's WP, and the period leading up to the loss(s) is critical, as more often then not, several factors may attribute to these loss(s). Posting these info., will also help other members with their tanks too, as ALL of us have/do experience these episodes. I'm with Dean in assisting forum members with this hobby, and will also contribute shrimps to members who have experience their loss, and share/post their tank & WP details....

Okay these are my current parameters

TDS- Dont know what that is. Don't have a test kit for that

Ammonia 4.0ppm

Nitrite 0ppm

Nitrate 0ppm

Temp: currently 21 but last few days highest i have seen was 24. Have kept the lid open and lights off to keep temperature down

Size tank in litres: 28 litres aquastart 320 with undergravel filtration system. Has a stocking on top of filter to prevent blocking powerhead.

Water used: Tap water

Additives used: Seachem Prime, API quickstart when adding new fish or shrimp and water changes

New shrimp added: No new shrimps added or adults however had many berried CRS and gave birth to some. Last time i counted was 7 but bodies disappeared. Found 2 dead baby shrimps.

Age of tank : roughly over 3 months.

Substrate: Gravel that had nutrients it in for plants

Other: Driftwood with java moss growing and

Tank went haywire after commenced on new shrimp products: Hikari shrimp cuisine and Large indian almond leaves.Prior to commencing these products on 26th November. Tank had parameters ph6, nitrite and ammonia 0ppm. Noticed dead shrimp on 27th and did parameter check and abnormal with ammonia spike.

Mate I have some Cherries I can give you to get you going again if you haven't got some more already.

I bought a chiller on the w/e after 3 days of putting frozen 2 litre cordial bottles in the tank every 2 hours.

How long has the tank been set up?

By the looks of it you dont have any filtration happening... you would have nitrate readings at least with ammonia that high...

From my view it looks like the tank hasn't cycled for whatever reason and its only after a couple of shrimp deaths that anything has happened.

Why those shrimp died in the first place I'm not sure, but if you can I would be moving the remaining shrimp to an established tank if avaliable.

In my experiences if there are only a few shrimp (<20) then the bioload is so miniscule that the plants are able to keep up with any ammonia. I have had a filter off for a week and it was all perfect readings, there were fish in there too - the plants just kept up with the waste... I didn't even get a reading when I turned the filter back on without cleaning it and blew a bunch of crap all through the tank the plants still kept up. This was however in a very heavily planted tank.

In a shrimp tank with fewer plants I would imagine the situation to go something along these lines.

The tank never actually 'cycled' the plants just took up the load. (At a pH of 6 the nitrifying capacity of the bacteria is something like 10% of that at 7.5 or so)

The new food has different ingredients and for whatever reason is 'richer' and therefore the plants aren't able to cope with the increased load. This has caused some shrimp to die which in turn has also boosted the ammonia and it is a slippery slope from there.

Can anyone tell that i have been watching too many Sherlock Holmes related TV shows lately - Too many theories and speculation :)

Yes you are reading this right. I have been doing water changes to get the ammonia down. Has my tank lost its good bacteria?? My tank has been running for over 3 months. I only have 6 crs left now i think. Ive lost count

:( but so far so good havent lost anymore but tank still haywire. Thank goodness i still have a berried female.

I was thinking of adding frog bit in my tank. Looks pretty cool. Anyone used frog bit in their shrimp tank before.
