I'm looking to buy some Dark blue shrimp!

Hi there,

Firstly I'd like to say that i'm very new to this forum, but also to shrimp (other than the common red cherries)! I want to get into the darker blues (i think they are either called royal blue, cobalt blue or dream blue or something? help me out on the actual name?). Also i'm not 100% sure I've posted this in the right place so if I'm in the wrong spot can someone direct me where to go?

I recently got a 2nd tank and I thought why not get some blue cherries into this new tank? I've never had blues before but I'd like to get the darker blues if possible (cobalt blues i mean - not the really dark or light ones though some variation is understood). I would also like any advice anyone is willing to give me about keeping them.

I'm looking to only get a few say 5-10, and mixed gender, happy for any age but would like at least some sub adult/adult ones. Is there a pricing guide that can help me so that I am paying a fair price.

ps: I looked through the threads but couldn't find anyone selling them in a darker blue colour? that or I couldn't understand some of the abbreviations for types/colours of shrimp (i'm new!) so if someone could clue me in on what their actual colour variety is called? that'd be great too!

Thanks in advance!

Hello @budgiebreder

If you are looking for a dark blue Cherry you will be after the Blue Dreams. From memory people are currently selling them for around $20 to $30 per Juvie.

Another blue cherry is the Blue Velvet but it is a lighter blue and they are going cheaper at $5 to $10.

Royals are a high grade Tiger shrimp and no one is selling atm but the last time someone was selling them I think they were asking about $150 for ea juvie.

I hope this help you.

Hopefully we're allowed to suggest online sites on here.  I just received my order of some light blue ones from aquatic arts.  They also have the darker blue ones as well.  All shrimp were healthy and are quickly settling into their new home.

Not if they are stocking something that would be in conflict with out sponsors. If this is an overseas site then not a problem as we here in OZ can't source from them.

Hi thanks for the reply! I've managed to find some very dark blues in a local pet store (brisbane) for $13 each. They seem to be doing well in their new home :). If anyone wants details then let me know - they aren't blue dreams but they'll do me. Thanks everyone for the replies! i thought i had been back here to post that i've got some!

I bought 6 of them. but could only find these 4 which handily enough decided to be close enough to fit into one pic! there is one on the plant (shadow left side) two on the ground (right below the plant one and on the brown rock) and one blending into the filter inlet (I swear it's there but it doesn't seem visible in the pic!)

I'm happy to post more photos when I get better shots if you like :) I just took this one because you asked so nicely :)

I would almost call these black shrimp but they do have a blue tinge when you see them in person.

One interesting thing he mentioned was "Bacteria pressure", which I guess just means number of bacteria around.  Yet I see all these other videos from shrimpkeepers bragging about how much bacteria their filtering system holds. Also interesting is no mention of using anti-biotics to treat bacterial infection.  I think that has fallen out of favor recently.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.
