New shrimp breeding set up.

So with winning the prize for the logo and all the soil, I was able to convince the finances that a new CRS tank was required.

As of tomorrow I have my last exam and then nearly 4 months break from Uni over summer :triumphant: I finally have time to start it.

Being a uni student I have tried to set it up as cheaply as I can without skimping on anything.

The equipment list is as follows.

Tank: Standard 4' - Gift from Girlfriend's Parents

Chilling/Heating: Teco TR10 with heater and UV addons. - Purchased 2nd hand just over a year old.

Stand: Custom made by me with free timber from work.

Soil: Benibachi from the Logo comp prize.

Filtration: Sump/refugium with 1200L/h pump- I have an interesting idea for this one.

Will be using RO water with SSM GH+.

And following in Dean's footsteps and not having to pay for water at my current place I'm planning on running a constant water change.

I'm planning on dividing up the tank into 3 major sections with a little something extra....

Little hint on the something extra... the current plan is to have cherry variants and CRS in this set up at different water parameters but both cooled by the one chiller.

OK, enough procrastination, I need to get back to study but will start uploading some pics tomorrow.

Nice! Large tanks are always handy for dividing up into smaller chambers.

How are you going to do the constant water changes?

cannot wait for those pics dude.

Sounds great! I've never heard of anyone with a setup that does constant water changes, but it's a brilliant idea. Can't wait to see how it turns out, so be sure to keep us updated with lots of photos :D

  • 4 weeks later...

After nearly a month of building this is finally running. Big thanks to Dean for answering my messages I was able to sort out a couple of pinhole leaks in the plumbing.

I Filled it up tonight and after a rookie error ending in 50L on the ground it is all working!

Will see how well the temperature control works and then add the soil tomorrow.

Stay tuned for pics.... I'm off to sleep for a good 10+++ hours :) Between this and work I haven't slept more than 3 hours a night in the last week or so.

I was trawling through my old threads and chuckled as this tank has been set up for a while now

this should remind me to update it soon

I'm interested to know how you chill 2 lots of water with one chiller!

I have a 4' tank divided into 3 major sections and a 70 cm sump divided in 2.

outside 2 divisions and left sump are pH7.5 with the sump pump running through the chiller.

the middle compartment and right sump are at pH6.

the chiller is a teco tc10 which is rated for a fair bit more than the total system

So the ph 6 water doesnt go though the chiller at all it just gets cooled by the surrounding compartments? Thats clever!

Sounds a good setup. Love your berried Yellow excellent colour.

That's pretty smart using the outer tank to cool the inner tanks, well done :encouragement: nice yellow cherry too :victorious:

glass is a pretty good conductor of heat and I figured with nearly half a square metre of glass contact between the 2 water bodies it would work. The tank was ~27 degrees and since the chiller got turned on I havent seen either tank ouside of the 23.5+/-0.5 range since

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got time to snap a couple of pics and upload them.

The main tank. From left to right: chocolates, rillis, crystals, pumpkin and yellows.

Im thinking about switching the rillis and yellows just to spread out the yellows and pumpkins in case some decide to jump they fence they will stand out.

Choc and rilli end.

Crystals.

Pumpkin/yellow.

some shrimp.

The whole set up still needs a few little tweaks and a bit of tidying up of airlines and cords. Uni has just been a bit hectic and have spent my little time in the shed watching the shrimp rather than finishing it :)

Great setup. good idea to separate the yellows and pumkins because if there is a way out they will find it!! Shrimp are absolute time wasters!!

Time for another update! The PH this morning is 6 and KH 0-1 (you can't measure zero obviously). I plan to check everything tomorrow and then a water change on satuday. At the moment the TDS is 190 which should drop to 170 after a water change and then 150ish after the following/next weeks water change. Last time I checked GH it was 6, but again I will do ALL the tests tomorrow. I had to resort to using a PH/KH- product (AQUACID) to get to where these parameters are now but as the water I use has PH6, GH0 and KH0 I assume/hope I won't need to use that from here on, but will see if the parameters stay stable for the next week and have a PH alert disc in the tank which should indicate any significant change. I don't like using these sort of products as a general rule and wouldn't if there were any shrimps in situ and that product has raised the TDS at about .5TDS per drop. I may well order some blue bolts towards the end of next week (the road to the house will be closed for a month from 3rd June so it is next week or wait another 6 weeks) and see how that goes. I plan to drip acclimate them overnight this time so as to not rush that as it shouldn't get cold indoors overnight anyway this time of year. This all depends on the tank parameters staying stable for the next week (aside from the mentioned TDS adjustments with the water changes), though the GH  may drop a tiny bit with using just RO to reduce the TDS but that is fine, and even could be a bonus. I did manage to find some nice floating plant that I had before (good old ebay), and will try and get a photo of that at some point to attach, Azolla red I think it is called? Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed for now but all appears to be going well at this point! Snails seem to be doing well at least.

That shrimp itself survived the molt just fine, but left about half dozen eggs still in the shell. I haven't measured KH in a really long time, but assume it is zero since I don't have any rocks besides a few small pieces of lava rock.  Maybe you have unwanted rocks in your tank?  My tank is the "long" style which I really like because I have a HMF on one end, and a pump outlet spout that shoots water all the way to the other end.  I have no idea how many shimp it can support because I don't really understand waste management in a tank.  Shrimp poop eventually turns into mulm, but then what?

As at time of this post the SL Aqua is available from this UK website, https://gbeeshrimp.co.uk/product/z1/

Thats a great photo, beautiful blue bolt, I hope it survived the molt without dropping the eggs! I think I can just about see some black dots (eyes) on the central egg but can't be 100% sure. I used to (and plan to again) do weekly water change of 10-15% but if you do too large or quick (not drip in new water) that would likely trigger a molt. What KH are they in, my new setup is sitting at (and refusing to budge) KH 3 and PH 7.5 so I may have to settle for neocaridina shrimp this time as opposed to the caridina I want, though not looking/deciding just yet, give the tank a bit more of a run in! Tap water here starts at kH 14, tds 320, when filtered goes to KH 0 and PH 6 but when put in the tank keeps going to KH3 and PH 7.5 despite 3 x 50% water changes???? You may be at 'maximum capacity' with only 20L tank especially if the tank is a cube type rather than shallow type?
