Male female ratio in endler fry

Hi everybody

I am wondering if the gender ratio in endler fry can be influenced by the WP in any way. :confused:

Asking Mr. Google you'll get all sorts of contradicting answers. :dejection:

Most of the fry that my endlers had in the past few month turned out to be male and only very few are female.

...or is that just the way it is with endlers?

I just feel so sorry for the girls being harrassed by a mob of males all the time. It clearly stresses them out.

I keep the genders seperate at the moment and will put only one or two of the prettiest males back in with the girls. :o

Definitely a very interesting question, I can't say I have noticed any difference one way or the other, although I have to say that I haven't really taken any notice either but I will from now on. :encouragement:

The way you are doing it is definitely the best way to get the best results & also the best way to guide the colour mutations in the direction you want. :victorious:

I never paid attention either! There is always plenty of each! I'll also see if the sex ratio is skewed one way or another.

My guess is that the ratio is roughly 3 males to 1 female...although I didn't really count.

Yes that's true...but it also means I have to dedicate 2 tanks to one colour variation....and with the limited space I've got that's really annoying.I'm coming to the realisation that I have to make desicions on what I REALLY want to keep rather than having EVERYTHING! (and that goes for the shrimpies too) :(

This is definitely the toughest decision, what to keep & what to focus on. :dejection:

Ineke has just gone through that phase, she might be able to give you some tips to make the choice a bit easier. :encouragement:

Believe me there is no way to make the choice easier but I now know which direction I want to go so once those shrimp start breeding I can then slowly let the older ones loose in the big tank and give away or sell off those I don't need. So I am keeping my Crystals, Mishlings and TB's, thats 2 tanks, starting a colony of Blue Velvet and when I have a few more then the Rillis can go. The Chocolates are giving me Blues so once I have a nice tank of Blues Breeding all the chocolates except my original older girls can all go. Which will give me 3 spare tanks for any selective breeding I might still want to do. Sounds like a plan and will be more manageable- also 1 of the spare tanks will be a holding tank for shrimp I am selling or giving away. Much easier than using foam eskies to try and keep track of them. I think the hardest part is deciding what you want to aim for really but it feels really good knowing I have a direction to go in -clear as mud right:D

My direction might change but I think I like the Blues of both types and love the Crystal, Mishling and TB (and those mongrel Tibees) as well so might eventually change to just one line with no cherries but that's the fun of the hobby you evolve as you get deeper into it. I have set my limits on the number of tanks I can have but I might lose a few Nano tanks in favour of slightly larger tanks but not as well as 8 is my limit ( and if I say it often enough I might stick to it):bee:

PH and temperature have a HUGE influence on sex ratios, at time of conception ONLY once the meeting of Egg and Sperm has happened the influence of PH and Temp is over

What are the Temps and PH of your water?

The tank they are in at the moment has pH 6.5 (probably a bit lower).

Temperature is 24 Celsius.

...but I had them in a different tank a while ago with neutral pH and temp around 22. I don't know when they "made" the fry in question ;)

You got me thinking now Bob....in my older fry there seemed to be more females than in recent drops. The younger fry seem to be nearly all male. would that be in accordance with your observations? I also think they were doing better in the other tank.

It is a long running debate about pH affecting the sex of live bearer offspring. But to really make it confusing I have found that cooler water will produce females and warmer water males ( in guppies at least). When my guppies where in an outdoors bathtub over winter with no heater the first to die off where the males while the females sailed through winter without issue. It was only once the weather warmed up again that the females dropped their young which was when I got a new batch of males.

Personally I think it is a survival thing, where the less necessary males die in the cold leaving more food available for the pregnant females. There is an Australian marsupial that has similar habits. They breed like crazy with the males eventually all dying off leaving the females to scoff all the available food, and then there still being plenty of food for the new offspring once they are weaned.

My feeling for mine is that I get more females than males at home (high ph and warmer temp) and about even at work(no idea of ph but constant 24deg)

It is a well known breeding tool to predict sex ratios, with most species having male preferences.

A friend of mine in Brisbane use to breed a lot is Red Rainbows, Incicus, he have the ratio down to what he wanted, using PH and Temp, he never let on but I know the Temp was up and I think the PH was Up to. His ratios were 80 to 90% Male and the balance Females

It needs to be done Scientifically and quantified, I have read papers about it in the breeding of some food fish, more male faster growth and Temp has a total effect on the sex of Crocodiles.
