Colour of baby shrimps

Hi everyone,

Spotted an "off" colour amongst the fire red babies in my tank last night.

Is this a common occurance?

Looks to be light blue amdist the moss and dark blue on the substrate?

First batch of babies for me so i am just wanting to know more about colouration.

Have 2 to 3 of them currently.

I've had red shrimp turn blue when the lights were off, but after the lights have been on for a while, they turned back to red.

If they are actually blue shrimp, then I'd have to question whether you have fire reds or bloody marys. I've heard bloody mary can throw some wacky colors sometimes...

If indeed fire reds, not sure what the blue ones would be called.

[emoji15]bloody mary? Hmmm they were sold as fire reds at the store.
That picture was them when the lights were switched on for 7 hours.
Interesting that you point out they change colour in relation to lights.
Below are some pictures of them.

Most of the babies are red, some are transparent, i think 2 are like a dark grey and than those weird blue ones. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. [emoji849]

Thank you for your input on this zoidburg!

**correction: meant to say the latest photos are photos of the adult "fire reds"**

Do they look like bloody marys to you?

I can't say what they are and will leave that to others, but when you bought the shrimps were they in a single colour tank or mixed with different colours, so then the babies could be cross bred. Of coarse they may have cross bred before they got to the place that you bought them?

Are these the shrimp in with the red crystals in the 16L? They have very good colour!

Bloody Mary actually don't come out in pictures very well... but they are kind of translucent as they have red flesh rather than a red shell.

Fire reds, to my understanding, should be more opaque in coloration.

I have Bloody Mary from two different lines... and honestly, they don't look the same! LOL They are both red shrimp, but one line the shrimp are more of a vibrant rich red, and the others are a darker red...

Hi simon!
Yep they were in a single coloured tank when i bought them. They were sold for sgd$2 each.
Yep they are now in the main tank with the red crystals. I dont know anything about breeding but put these 2 breeds tgt because back than i only had bought this one tank and thought they would be ok together because they share the same red colour?(my stupid brain)
Will have to see those blues if they are truely blues i guess. Maybe if they reach adulthood they will have another colour?? For now, i think you may be right they have been cross bred when they were put on sale.[emoji2368]

I have been schooled again.
Thank you for the guide on how to tell them apart.
Sometimes i think the store owners dont change the tags on the tanks. They probably just restock empty tanks with livestock as soon as it is empty.
Saw like a blue bolt tag but it had red cherries in there[emoji2960]
Bought the fire reds because they were pretty to look at.

The Red Cherry are perfectly fine with the crystals as they can't interbreed, I was just a bit confused by the Red cherry reference early on and the Fire red/Bloody Mary later, wasn't sure whether you had both? I think I am all caught up now though?

It looks like they must be cross bred, unless as Zoidburg says they change colour for periods dependant on light? A nice shade of blue in the photo.

Hope you enjoy setting the new tank(s) up this weekend.

New info coming out... Neos can possibly breed with Tigers, so by extension, may also breed with Crystals... although I don't know how a situation like that would come up...

Fire Reds and Bloody Mary's are a type of Red Cherries... Fire Red being a grade of Cherry, Bloody Mary a different color. But yes, very confusing! Jojo's shrimp were sold as Fire Reds.

  • 1 month later...

Woke up his morning and snapped a picture of little blue(could be him) in the main tank, this is the offspring of fire red mummy.
Is it blue or black, one cant be sure in the light. Is this gonna be a cull? Cant help but think it is too pretty to be one.

Its difficult to tell the colour when they are young and it may darken when they get older as well. It looks blue but it could just be the light! Pretty though as you say.

It really depends on how you want to run your tanks. If you want good colour I think most people remove the odd/different shrimps and poor colour ones. This isn't a problem for you if you are going to put them in with the tetras as you will still see them and they are at little risk and will probably have a happy life still doing their thing. Neocaridina aren't able to breed until 3 months old so you have a little time to decide. If you don't remove the odd and poor colours you will end up, as I have, with them reverting to wild shrimp with little colour, or brown blotchy colouring for neocaridina type! At this stage I have about 50% red colour and 50% browns but it is in the tank I am little interested in, so just leave it. I expect all mine will  end up reverting to a wild brown type over time through mixed breeding?

Looks like a dark blue shrimp... I'd honestly believe that you either have Bloody Mary shrimp or shrimp that have been mixed with Bloody Mary perhaps?

It's up to you how you want to handle the little blue shrimp!

We should just call them bloody marys from now. [emoji23]

I guess we could have some more time to decide what to do with them.
Meanwhile, i just stare at the tank for hours. So entertaining to watch!

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
