Do Shrimp stop eating and take breaks hidding or just chilling?

Hi new to shrimp keeping.  I have 4  Red cherry shrimp, i got them 2 days ago.  When I fist put them in they werr pretty active.  2 M 2 F.  Water parameters amonia 0 water temp 22/24 degrees aqua clear filter 30 (i have 20 gallon tank planted) with air stones and filter on high 24/7.  I also have 2 nerite snails tha5 are thriving.

So 1 M and 1 F still eat alot and move around enough.  My other F And M just hide in the same spot for hours on end sometimes not even eating.  The M hides under driftwood and the F in a tall ant at the base but she like to be facing the substrate. Is this normal? I see them move here and there and eating when out but like mentioned they like to hide and not move for hours sometimes.

Its like theyre full and arent hungry so they just chill.  The other two ate almosy always eating when visible which is way more often then the 2 that hide.

Im kinda super stressed any advice or help is appreciated

I cant upload pictured my picture sizes are way bigger than 0.98MB ?

Not gonna sugar coat it. Shrimp sitting still for long periods of time isn't a good sign.

There are a lot of other water parameters that can impact shrimps health.

What is your KH, GH, TDS, pH and Nitrates? (If you have test equipment for them)

In fact, knowing the water parameters from the person/place you bought them from is also important. If the water the shrimps came from is on the other spectrum to your tank, then the shrimp are going to suffer. Go ask the person/place you bought it from. Then try to match it in your  tank. You can slowly bring your tank's water parameters back to ideal with regular water changes. But initial parameters should match the seller's parameters to reduce the shock.

Whenever I go to my Local Fish Shop to buy fish, I bring my own TDS and pH meter.

Most problems are mainly attributed to water parameter issues.

Why only the 2 shrimps? Well they were probably already weak specimens.

Well not that they are sitting still all the time, but the female will come out eat swim the go back to hide in the same spot in one of my plats.  But i can see her slightly through the plants and shes eating and or almost always moving her legs and swimmlets.

I also just gound a shell from molting, so maybe shes about to molt since one of my males has molted.

I dont know why just those 2, Im hoping with the info i just gave about you might know abit more :).

anything helps thanks

Hi MattyShrimp,

I'd go with jayc's reasoning as well. From my experience, shrimps that aren't actively foraging most of the time don't tend to survive. However, since you did say that they are eating, they could just be enjoying the shade and darkness more. Also, since you've just set up your tank, I'm guessing that the only few surfaces with any bio-film are on the plant leaves themselves hence them choosing to chill there.

You should still test your water parameters though. IMO zero ammonia readings are the bare miniumum for keeping shrimp. TDS, Temp, GH and KH all play a huge role too!

Right. That is better then.It sounds like they are about to mount and is looking for a quiet spot to go through the process. They do that. I believe it is because they feel vulnerable, so they hide.

But keep a close eye on them.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
