A sad farewell

I may have mentioned this before - getting a bit old here and my rememberer is forgetting things? I have closed down my shrimp room as I can no longer manage looking after so many tanks due to my back and neck injuries. I keep getting requests to buy my shrimp but sadly I will now only rarely have any shrimp available. I am only keeping a few tanks for my pleasure which has meant putting my pure lines in together with my hybrids. I just can't carry water - even with an almost automatic setup I still end up carrying buckets of water- and find it hard spending time cleaning tanks and catching shrimp. It was a very hard decision to make after all these years in the hobby but now it's done so I will just have to enjoy the few tanks I have. Just as well my main breeding was Taitibees towards the end and I do LOVE my Taitibees so although it means my pure TB will now be in with the Taitibees it isn't such a bad thing for me. So thank you to the people requesting to buy my shrimp but I genuinely will have very few to sell or give away now. I am still working on my yellow from Tangerine tigers- they are a lovely yellow with none of the spots and stripes of the tangerines and also the yellow headed clear body ones. These are in their own tank for now  until I decide what to do with them. So I now only have 2 tanks - 1x110 litre and 1 x210 litre - plus my cull ponds which have some very nice shrimp in them - Neos in 1 and Taitibees in the other. I'm also going to resurrect one of my very first Aqua one cubes to have a small tank with a Betta , a few catfish and three very nice Bloody Mary shrimp I found in one of the tanks I closed. I will make sure they have lots of hiding places and hope they survive. That will be the exact mix I had when I first started keeping shrimp a small cube with a few shrimp and a couple of fish! Back to the good old days. But anyway thanks again to my many friends in the hobby. I will still be beavering away in the back ground but not really involved in breeding anymore ?image.thumb.jpeg.c4767336e4bbf92e311d6421cf289834.jpegimage.jpeg.859d896d4725b62e15f2707f02cf1771.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.b7049b41b3c3342cf3f607862695b9d9.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.62e8e08553bd47001ba0b5d3b0545350.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.a2afc3c61a3ae9f5205e31b6d0001f38.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.e52cef4f5a3d4a01f2a05f9b5bd24e28.jpegimage.thumb.jpeg.298ee5a201aae66693797529e2e55d0c.jpegimage.thumb.jpg.e36f49e8904ac12a2a43e68ca32f65a1.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.30861e6b216b010130c26e6c9180c046.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.66aa68d611b646b9a05c674633f765e6.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.1be429b6de698a125d665cab7ca71dda.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.95cb80319c6a9a899e35e2bc97ebd963.jpgimage.jpg.6590cb10ca498eab50fe4de98ddece5a.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.65db05924f9e1853f2e4cad7ec50936d.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.a743f9cf04169dee1d19790cd4fff035.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.f9a574e7ea70b9063338c77a8673b5c3.jpgimage.thumb.jpg.613bfd5c8286d7c77e8c0b58ce3f1ad6.jpgIMG_20150907_093230_zpselqq9yal.thumb.JPG.66656cafc931339f1eb7d4dc8676bf25.JPG

You are the queen of shrimp Ineke.

You will still be even after downsizing. At least you are not giving them up all together. And we will still have your knowledge to share on SKFA.

Good luck with the next phase of your hobby.

thanks @Jayc I'm glad I don;t have to give up completely and maybe I will even enjoy this phase more. now my shrimp will be left to their own devices I won't know what I might end up with and that was always the thrill of the Taitibees except I picked their partners -now it will be a free for all and you just never know what you might get ?

  • 3 months later...

Hi Ineke  Wayne (wayne6442 ) here, I hope all is going well with you, I know what it is like . I gave up totally on shrimp about 4/5 years ago but they never ever go away,I have just recently renewed contact with SKF and I am feeling my way ( convincing the missus ) towards getting another small tank and a collection of yellow or blue cherries to start with. I doubt if i will be allowed to go back to breeding again ,but a small tank might be doable I hope

Take care

Regards

Wayne

As long as you don't give the game away completely, have some nice nano set ups around the home to fulfil your shrimp interest.

You have some nice photos above, some absolute beauts of shrimp, well done.

Hope all goes well, can definately understand where you are coming from in regards to health.

You might even enjoy the interest/hobby even more now perhaps.

I'm down to 1 tank now -The Yellows have been taken on by another SA breeder so hopefully that strain will continue on. The hardest part for me is seeing my pure lines deteriorate -I had some very nice shrimp but they are breeding with my hybrids so I'm slowly losing the nicer patterns. I think over a few months I may get some better looking shrimp again but never the standard I had unless I buy oin some more pure shrimp . That seems to be an issue I will just have to cope with. Although the new babies are OK nothing really stands out and most of my best shrimp are now dying of old age at 2-21/2 years old. I'm happy to coast along with what I have and as most of my tanks are now sold off as well I won't be able to setup too many tanks if MTS strikes again.

In truth after having had so many pain issues looking after my tanks it is a bit of a relief not to have to spend the hours of maintainence that I was doing. I guess i have to look at the positives to me and stop worrying about the loss of my nicer shrimp. At least I can honestly say - been there done that !

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
