seachem purigen

Hi how many of us shrimp keepers use seachem purigen and wear in or out of your filter, and y do you use it

Only when needed - to reduce Nitrate build up. And removed after getting Nitrate levels back in range. So I only use it on rare occasions. 

In Australia, we have a cheaper alternative called Macropore. Does the same job as Purigen. That is what I use.

I'm no pro when it comes to the ins and outs of shrimps but when I used macropore in my shrimp tank the water stayed crystal clear which I been told in the past, shrimp don't like the super clear water and prefer water with tinnitus (I think it's called) and purigen and macropore removes it completely from the water. 

Jayc please correct me if I'm wrong it is a good question and I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more on the affects of long term use.

Marks Shrimp Tanks he has them on he's tanks for crystal clear water, so I think it's each to there own on that question,

I used it for a while and decided to stop after reading about the many benefits of having tannin and other organic compounds in the water. There's plenty of science to back this up and@jayc will no doubt be able to point some of it out for us.

However that's not to say that shrimp wont necessarily be happy and breed well in tanks filtered with purigen. I guess some breeders probably do use it 24/7 still although I know of a few who tried it and decided shrimp did better without it.

Aside from nitrate control it might be a good option for people wanting to breed the australian native zebra shrimp (likes extremely low TDS) in aquariums.

And it certainly does make the water crystal clear as@Brentwillmers pointed out. Fantastic stuff for a display tank!
