Who here keeps killifish?

I would love to see some pics of what you keep.

I wish Serkan was still active here. He had heaps. And it was always great to see pics of his fish.

Wish I was still keeping killis @jayc it's a great community of people with a really different vibe to much of the rest of the aquarium scene. We need more people involved to see a return to the golden age of killis in this country... as breeders drop off species are lost, sometimes forever.

Serkan still has an amazing fishroom and heaps of fish. He posts routinely on the killi group page.

Never too late Kiz.

Get back into it! Just start with 1 tank ?

Would be good to get more Killi keepers on this forum. A friendly Killi community in a friendly forum.

Beautiful fish, purchased some many years ago due to the colouration, sadly their lifespan is too short, even less than shrimp. ??

That would depend on the type of Killi you got.

The annuals don't live very long, but are prolific breeders.

I keep non annuals, so they live longer.

@jayc is absolutely right, while annuals like the Nothobranchius species don't live much longer than a year in aquaria, they breed prolifically during that time. The non-annual Aphyosemion that jayc showed here can live 2-3 years which is just as good as livebearers.

Your bitaeniatum is the Lagos strain jayc.

Thanks for that ! Good to know.

I've clearly still got a long ways to go. Can't believe you just look at it and go "oh yeah, that's a such and such strain."  ?

These both came from the same batch of eggs and at least one of them is a Gardneri

These fish are both gardneri @Munroco, one has turned out as the gold form. There's lots of aquarium strain gardneri around but yours are really nice with the gold edging all round.

  • 4 weeks later...

I actually saw 3 killi species for sale the other day at local pet shop (usually its only the Golden Wonder if anything locally), and was sorely tempted to get them. But common sense over ruled the heart because I realised that I didn't really have the room for more tanks, let alone the time to dedicate to live feeding and sorting/ drying eggs to keep the populations going.

But I do love killi fish with their extreme lifestyles and amazing colours all packed into a little package.

Thats encouraging to hear that more shops are stocking killis.

My LFS stocks killis but sporadically.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
