Help! Identifying PRL gender

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm having trouble identifying the gender of this PRL shrimp and would appreciate any advice on if it is male or female. Still new to the shrimp world as and I've been able to identify RCS rather easily but have a harder time with the PRL crystals for some reason. Sometimes this shrimp looks like a male and sometimes it looks like a female ..

Is it a juvenile?

If it is, then it could be a female.

Another trick to ID them is to check their antenna length.

Female = antenna is about the same length as it's body, a little longer perhaps.

Male = Antenna is 1.5 times it's body length.

I have no idea where to draw the line between juvie and adult but I believe its a adult about 3/4 inch. And when you say antenna length longer than its body do you mean the whole length of the shrimp from nose to tail ? It's antenna length is a little longer than its whole length from nose to tail if thats what you mean.

I think of Juvies as Teenagers. That is, not fully grown to it's full size.

Yes, antenna length from nose to tail. Best to check when the shrimp angles it's antenna towards it's tail.

If the antenna length is only a little longer than it's body(head to tail) length, it's a male.

If the antenna length is much longer than it's body by 1.5 times, than it's a female.

Hey now... you can't have it both ways!!!

Ok... how does one tell if a probably male shrimp is sexually mature or a sneaky juvie female before her first set of eggs??

It's not a completely goofy question - I've got a shrimp that I'd love to be a mature male so I can have him mate with as many females as I can find, but I can't tell if he's mature or not or a he at all.  If not, I should put the girls back into the main tank to mate with my second choice males so they don't just sit around.  At the moment, the hopefully mature male and his proposed harem are in a breeding box because I'd like to be able to keep track of the progeny.

He's supposed to be an Aura Blue x Taitibee.  I don't know for sure about the Aura Blue part, but he sure is pretty and has a mostly clear body with a blueish head and a light sprinkling of tiger markings.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. I just wanted to come by and give a update. You guys were correct and she is a female. Since my original post, she has actually had 3 batches of babies so far totaling 30-40 shrimps that survived and is currently berried. She's my best female breeder currently and has made me proud!

1. The blue bolt is definitely a female

2. As for the tiger its a little iffy but I think I'm leaning more towards the side of it being a male
