  1. Hello all I have a small setup ( for now :) , 2 x 60L both with internal filter system In one i keep PRL , benibachi x hakata , not the most beautifull ones in the beginning but it seems to be getting allot better lately The other tank is a ''mixed tank '' containing the following : MALE : 2x Zebra pinto black 1x crystal white 2x Ebi Tengi Tangerine Tigers (golden) 3x Spotted Head Red FEMALE: 1x (shadow)Red Taitibee 1x PRL SS 1x PRL SSS In this mixed tank i now discovered the following fry / baby shrimp Soil is akadama 1-4 mm Can someone help me with naming these hybrids ? And what do you think , is it worth it to select these patterns for further breeding ? Thanks allot !
  2. will cherry shrimp eat the brown algae that builds up on the sides of the glass, or should I wipe it off? It's also growing on some of my plants and I can't get rid of it!

    Will my RCS be okay?

I bought 7 RCS for my 2.5 gal tank yesterday (no filter/heater). I also have a marimo ball as well as some java moss. I was wondering if this no filter set up is okay for my RCS? This morning they were acting less active than yesterday. They weren't picking at the marimo ball or anything, and were all just standing still..

    New Shrimp Tank

Okay got that terrible disease we all get a bad case of MORETANKITIS. It started with the plan to keep it very basic and minimal. A while ago I got some really nice driftwood from Fishmosy and couldn't resist using some. So it is still evolving and was done a budget of $0. I decided to split the 3ft tank into two sections and remebered that I had some glass dividers spare and thought too easy they are already drilled. Went to get them and then remembered I gave them to the guy who bought three 4ft tanks of me....Damn!!!! What now???? I found some fairly thick clear perspex. Cool this will work.......Now how can I add add holes for flow between the two sides? I know I will cover the holes with plastic mesh. Searched high and low couldn't find any. Ahhhhhhh!!!! I threw it out a few weeks ago.......Damn!!!! I was trying to think of what to do when I noticed the top of an old fry breeding box. So I cut out a rectangle at the bottom and fitted some plastic flywire to stop shrimplets getting through and fixed it in place. Works a treat. I then cut the perspex divider a couple of mm less then the width of the tank and split some old air hose which I fitted onto each side. This allowed me to jam it into position firmly enough to stay but also allows me to take it out if I decide to take it back to a single tank, without having to try and clean up silicone. Driftwood, mixture of shrimp sand, black gravel, small river pebble, clay balls, grey slate Hang on filter, air filters So I have used some bolbitis, sword, val, java fern, windolove, Native moss, riccia fluteans, subwassertang. I intend to put some hornwort and elodea at the back and am also going to add some marshwort which I hope will grow up to the water level and give a waterlily type look. I still have some plants to go in at the back to get some height but here are a few pictures. You can see the lid of the fry saver used as a vent. Be kind and remember this was done on a zero budget One of the pieces was a branch so I decided to use it and make it look like a weeping willow and attached it to a piece of slate then added some java moss I decided to hide the air filter behind the large piece of driftwood. The moss ledges from Newbreed
  6. Can anyone recommend somewhere to get a dark, inert gravel for cherry shrimp? I've got various coloured cherries and rilli's and have had a few deaths. I'm current using fluval stratum, but after discussions with a very competent shrimp keeper I think it could be the substrate that is not agreeing with them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
  7. Hello all, I am new to shrimp keeping and need some advice please. 4 weeks back I moved my CRS, CBS and white shrimp to a new tank and everything was going fine, but for the past 2 weeks my shrimp seem not to be moving around very much and just seem to hide. They where quite active in the old tank and i do not know why this is happening, have not had any deaths and a few of the females are berried. Any advice would be greatly apreciated. Cheers
  8. Here we go, for a bit of fun. Things you can say about shrimp, but not about anything else. Its simple, like the TV show who's line is it anyway. You just have to come up with something that is perfectly acceptible when talking about shrimp , but not so acceptable in ordinary conversation. I'll kick us off; "I just bought a few juvenile females"
  9. Hi all, just looking into to doing an all Chameleon Shrimp only tank set up, I have a 27l tank which I had planned to do but decided against it, so now looking to perhaps do the same tank but with no plant life, except mosses, driftwood, just after some information for a I guess you could call a Chameleon Biotope tank. Substrate? Flora? Water Parameters? The tank will be some time off from being started as I want to look into everything first. Mosses I have in mind are Native Weeping Moss, mini Pellia, any others I could perhaps consider? Driftwood will be a piece of Gold Vine. Thoughts?
  10. So as some of you know I have a thing for Chameleon Shrimp, so when I decided to re-do my tank and add only Chameleon Shrimp with no other Shrimp and some Threadfin Rainbows, I thought they would all be fine seeing the Threadfin Rainbows have such a small mouth and throat. So today I decided to have a little scope around the tank to see if I could find any Chameleon and have to say I'm pretty disappointed, so far have only found 3 adults, out of a possible 40+. I'm gathering the Threads have taken to the Chams, sadly. So what now? Do I just leave the tank with what Chams are left in there amongst the Threads? Or, should I look to do a small Cham only tank? Really not too sure, wanted to just focus on 1 tank, but now... not too sure, I do really like the idea of a Cham only tank. Could it be unheated? Seeing it's indoors? Does it need to be filtered? Seeing it's a Cham only tank? Should I go for a small planted Betta tank? Or a small planted Nano tank? Or, could I perhaps do a planted plastic/glass vase or bowl? Ideas are there, the Chams aren't though, a bit disappointing really.
  11. I've had three shrimp die in the last couple of days in my blue body carbon rili tank. Deaths have occurred since a small water change on Monday. Parameters are as follows: PH: 7.6 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 5 GH: 107ppm KH: 53ppm TDS: 160 Temp: 22 deg All other shrimp in the tank look fine, and all shrimp in my three other tanks are also fine which were water changed at the same time. I understand they can have shedding issues after a water change, but after coming home to my favourite big blue girl dead today, I'm really upset and hoping there's not something I'm missing. Thanks for any help!
  12. Hi everyone, I'd love to get some Caridina sp WA 4 - North Australian Chameleon shrimp for my aquarium but I'm having trouble finding people who sell them in WA. I have spoken to fisheries and they are happy for people to keep them as they are WA natives. Does anyone have any ideas where I might be able to get some? Cheers
  13. Hi all, just wondering what Chameleon Shrimp keepers feed their Chameleons, I have plans to do a Chameleon Shrimp only tank and was wondering what foods are right, I've used Shrimp Crack in the past, what else can I look at? Algae discs?
  14. How is this even possible? Day 1 evening just before I put in some moss: Day 3 In the morning All the typus replaced by a single black cherry, meta cube still sealed. I've managed to round 6 back up and will see if it happens again. Might have a gap in my cube?
  15. Thought I would share a few pics of the wonderful rifle shrimp that I received from Fishmosy. This is two of the males. You can see that distinctive stripe down their body. In the background basically at the bottom of the root section of the fern is a fresh moult from one of the rifles. The more I have to do with these shrimp the more I become fascinated with them. I think they are right up there as one of my favourite shrimp. This is one of the smaller male rifles. This one is more of a light bluish color and you can see how easily it would blend into its environment. Even though it's obscured there is an adult size rilli directly behind it. The look massive compared to the other shrimp in with them. I think the best picture I have ever taken of a shrimp. Couldn't do it again if I tried. I was actually able to put a tape measure up to measure the size of the rock and the rifle. The rock is approx 90mm and the Rifle is a bit over 5cm.There is a bigger one but it wouldn't co-operate to get a pic. I also noticed the differences in color of the rifle shrimp. Considering their size it is amazing how at times they are very hard to see. They blend into their enviroment very well I don't know why there are such differences in color because I believe they all came from the same area. Perhaps Fishmosy or Bob can shed some light on the reason for this. They vary from a light blue to an aqua blue, green, brown and a light orange.
  16. I've seen a few pics of people's tank recently and they seem to have a mixture of red rilli and light blue coloured shrimp together. I'm assuming these guys don't necessarily breed true? If rilli's breed other colours do they still need to be separated, or can you then keep them all together? Or would they breed bad offspring? I've got a few shrimp tanks setup now and would love to learn more about breeding etc so I do the right thing ?
  17. Hey guys Im new to shrimp and very excited about getting my tank up and ready! But I am having a bit of trouble deciding what to do about my gH, kH and pH My tanks been going just over a week and currently my parameters sit at the following- Temp:24 pH:6.2 gH:3 kH:0 Ammonia: .5 (will cycle/water change this down to 0 hopefully) and I am using Fluval Stratum I am wanting to get the ph to 6.6-6.8 and was wondering what I should do to achieve this? I have heard Airstones can help raise pH a bit, is this true? I am wanting to get my gH to 6 (not too much higher for I may eventually add crsytals to the tank and want to practise keeping the parameters in a safe zone for them as well as the cherrys). And I don't know what to do about my kH?? Some people say kH of 0 is fine for Cherry shrimp, others say it should be higher. Has anyone had any adverse effects from a kH of 0? My thought was that if its fine to keep the kH at 0 then I would use Salty Shrimp Bee gH+ to bring up the gH Really appreciate your help guys! This shrimp thing has a lot in it! Cheers, Snewls

    Shrimp Foods with Fish?

Thought I'd throw a post up to see if any other members here have used or do use Shrimp foods on their fish. I have used Boss Aquaria's Shrimp Crack before and my Bristlenose have loved it, so I kept throwing in a piece here and there, now I'm out, ha, just threw in a piece of Boss Aquaria's Shrimp Snow and the Bristlenose have gone off, I mean gone nuts over it, it's messy but the Bristlenose seriously love it. Anyone else use foods made for Shrimp on fish?
  19. First up the tank my Blackmores are living and breeding in, they share it with a couple of Darwin Red Nose, Chameleons, at least one Darwin Algea Shrimp, a growing school of spotted blue eyes and a few hundred snails. The log dominates the tank and all the shrimp take full advantage of the dark recesses of it. Most of the above pictures are of juvi or sub adult shrimp.
  20. Thought I would post some pics of the wonderful riffle shrimp and native moss I received from Fishmosy. They look like giants compared to y culled rilli and cherry shrimp... The shrimp loved the native moss Rare fern and native moss on driftwood

    Filterless Shrimp Tank

I'm thinking of turning off my Eheim 2213 in my Mr Aqua 45l tank, it's heavily planted, 8 hours of light period each day with a 2 hour break in there and Shrimp are fed every second day. Just wondering if this would be OK to run without the filter going.

  23. Hey guys, So a couple days back I bought two CRS in hopes of starting a colony of shrimp. I added them into my tank of 5 Red cherries. All has been well, apart from the fact that I do not know the gender of both my CRS. One of them is significantly bigger than the other, but I still have no idea. Occasionally, I will see the little one chase the bigger one around the tank, but I don't know if that means anything. It would be helpful if someone could tell me the gender of both of my shrimp, or give me some tips to observe myself. I have a photo of both of them, but it's not the best quality. Also, if my CRS are both males, would it be possible from them to cross-breed with my RCS? Help would be greatly appreciated! 24. What makes a good shrimp net? It can be materials, price, function, does it catch shrimp successfully? I've used had many shrimp nets, and the best ones, that actually catch shrimp easily, are the ones whose net stays open and forms a little cup that does not scare the shrimp into swimming the other way when you try to catch them. Because it is not obstructed and looks like an escape route, the shrimp just seem to swim right in. Unlike soft, floppy nets, that look like a barrier. These nets don't have enough stiffness to keep the net open. The solution? A cable tie cut into the appropriate length to keep the net open. Carefully place it into the net like so ... There you have it. A $2 net that will now catch shrimp like the $30 one I have. Jayc.
