SKF Interviews

Recommended Posts

Hello SKFers,

I am in the process of organising mini interviews with some of the very best shrimp keepers around these parts.

I have been luck enough to get our own SKF members @newbreed and @Gbang to be the first two interviewees.

So this is your chance to ask these legendary shrimp keepers what you would like to know about them. So in the comments below add one question to either Newbreed or Gbang. Each question needs to be on a separate comment and needs to be address to either one of the above. If you like a particular question please like it. The top 10 questions based on the likes will be  used for the interview.

I will be asking other shrimp keepers for their permission to do an interview also but if you have certain people in mind or if you would like to be interviewed in this manner please pm me.

Maybe selectively breeding tips? I'm working on CRS with an intention of having a solid and clear whites and reds.

Food enhancing their well being and increasing shrimplet survival

I would be interested in their tips for line breeding shrimp for quality and their advice to beginners starting with lower quality shrimp on how to eventually end up with good quality shrimp colonies.

If a moss tree fell over in a tank and no one was there to hear it, does it make a sound?

LOL! No!

Where do you see the shrimp hobby in 5 or 10 years?

What do you think will be the next 'big thing' in shrimp? Is it going to come from hybrid crosses or from line breeding a pure species as was done for CRS/CBS and cherries?

what is your preferred tank setup and WP for cherries and bee and tiger shrimp?

substrate or buffer what brand?

plants/mosses (and how much of tank is covered or bare)?

how do you mineralise and what parameters do you aim for?

how much and how often do you do WC?

what size tank and what filtration do use and what filter media?

how much surface agitation and how much flow/current?

what is your average and also maximum stocking density?

how often do you test your water and what testkits do use? - pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, gh, kh, calcium, phosphate.

How often do you cull?

what's the longest ypu have been away from your shrimps leaving them completely unmonitored?

few more random but fun Qs -

best tip for beginners?

what has been your worst shrimp experience?

what has been your funniest shrimp experience?

love n peace

PS was i supposed to only ask one question? woops ;-)

thing is they're mostly short sharp and shiny just take a few seconds :-)

i could be wrong but my guess is that a lot of other people might be interested in hearing the basic technical detail of how top breeders run their tanks?

in lieu of this information. id like to rephrase my suggestions as a single question -

can you describe the technical details of how you setup your aquariums for breeding? For example - plants/mosses, substrate/buffer, remineralisation of water, size of tank, filtration and media used, WC regime, WP testing frequency, stocking density, lighting, redundancy/backup systems and maintenance schedule?

how's that for u Dman? it does technically now fit the criteria of being one question? :-)

Not sure what you mean? I am pretty sure I mentioned I would be asking 10 questions in the first post I made. I don't think I limited the type of questions anyone could ask with any criteria.

I'll add this question to the poll too. If it is in the top 10 I'll ask it.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
