saj's shrimp macros

Wow, I'm not sure what to say Dean. I'm humbled that you (someone I admire and look up to) is asking me for advice. Personally I don't use a tripod. I've essentially started using my lens maxed out for the closest focus and started moving the camera back until everything is in focus enough. That's on some of the shots. Others it's the old focus and mess around.

I also have a flash that is justiciable in terms of brightness and has a pivot for the flash.

If you have any other questions I'll try, but I'm still a noob at this photography stuff despite having my camera and lens for years.

Lol. Thanks mate, but I'm just another shrimp breeder like you and everyone else :)

When I zoom in to max, the focused part of screen is like a narrow strip in centre of lens and I find it hard to get the shrimp in that tiny area... Think I need the new camera soon :)

You need to increase is your aperture Dean, therefore increasing your field of depth. When larger the F stop the more field you'll have in focus. As a result you must adjust your shutter speed / ISO / Increase lighting (flash)

For those interested in what gear I use. It's nothing fancy. The limiting factor is the user, followed by lens and then camera body. I use a Canon 400D ( I think I purchased it new in like 2006), Tamron 90mm macro lens and "cheapie" Yongnuo Speedlite. The flash has diffusers, adjustable flash intensity and adjustable flash angle. For what I have (all beginners stuff) I'm happy with my results. I still shoot and hold my camera like I have Parkinsons. If anyone wants more info on my lens or flash shout out and I'll work on something for you.

Here's this morning's quick efforts.

Not happy with this, but I like the scale.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm going to appologise for these photos as they aren't the same quality as the last couple of batches but wanted to share them anyway. Once again. I'm sorry

Horrible and out of focus C.longirostris. BUT she's orange.

One of my "Blue Tinge Chocolates" I got from Dean that time he had them cheap. I wonder if those light coloured eggs are fertile.

Nice pics! Got quite the collection and looks to be ever expanding :)

The only thing that's not expanding is my bank balance. *sigh*
