WA shrimp keeping

Hi All, I have been keeping shrimps for 2 years now. Due to work relocation, I have moved to Perth recently from Brisbane. I'd like to start my shrimp hobby again in Perth. I saw a few shrimp sellers on gumtree and another forum a couple months ago (just back from overseas). But I could not find any atm. I was wondering if those sellers have troubles with the Fisheries. Also anyone on here has any for sale? Thanks

Welcome to the forum Raukem86,

You are correct a lot of shrimp-keepers in Perth are laying very low because of issues with the fisheries.

What type of shrimp are you looking for? I am sure there are members that can sell some to you.

Thank you for your response Disciple. I'm planning on setting up my shrimp tank in the next couple weeks. I'll probably go for crs/cbs first then taiwan bees. I left my 3 shrimp tanks in Brisbane with all my equipment so I'll start buying stuff again. I'd like to shop at John's shop (The Tech Den). I was wondering if you know any similar aquarium shop in Perth? Thanks

Your Welcome,

Sounds like a good plan.

You can still order things from The Tech Den. I buy from them all the time and other forum sponsors.

When your tank is cycled pm me I will have some CRS available.

Welcome to the forum, there are numerous members who will help you with stock and advice if you need it. We have some very knowledgeable people when it comes to shrimp including native shrimp. The boys at Tech Den will definitely look after you and would be more than happy to send you what you need. I believe they have a flat postage rate as well. Make sure you mention that you are a member on this forum and you will receive a discount. Read the notes on their site about ordering and receiving your discount. Look forward to seeing some pics of your set up when you are up and running. Disciple is a great guy and will happily help you, he,s just not allowed to sell you any of the shrimp he is keeping for me......LOL

I am using RO so I'd like to keep my tds around 150.

I am still waiting for Nitrite going down. I dosed ADA Bacter 100 so it won't take to recycle my tank.

I tried to pm you but some errors occurred.

Cheers :)

All good man,

Do you have a plan on how to keep the tank cooled when summer comes around?

I will have this fan on but I don't think it will help much so probably I will have the aircon on.

Or I might get a mini chiller as my tank is only 30l. What'd you reckon Disciple?

Cheers

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
