Can this work as 2 separate tanks

Hi Guys,

I am playing around with the idea of getting something like this and putting 2 different type of shrimp in separate 50% compartments. Is this doable fairly simply? What would I need?

Most of those clip-in dividers leave a significant gap at the sides that shrimp could move through. The holes are usually too big. If the model you're looking at can be modded to overcome these problems then it could work. 

You can't rely on passive water movement through the divider. The filter will need to pick up on one side and return on the other. I wouldn't recommend putting 2 types where mixing them would be disastrous, just in case they find a way to the other side.

Ok good to know. I might need something a bit more sophisticated moving forward if I want to keep different species in a split tank.

To split it, couldn't you use a hm filter?

Yeah you could but then if you ever remove the mat to clean it... the shrimp are mixed.

I divided my 4 footer with dividers made of fine ss mesh that has a frame. Works great but i have a filter for each section.

Yep I would prefer 1 tank split in to 2 or 3 sections that way I don't have lots of tanks around the house.

I have a tank divided in 2 with a metal mesh covered with a very thin mesh and foam on each sides to try to make it leak proof. The main filter is on one side, but the output has been divided in 2, so there's an output and good flow in each part.

I had yellow neon on one side, and blue pearls on the other. Blue pearls are breeding like crazy rabbits, and I found blue shrimplets very often in the yellow territory. I never understand how they succeed to go through and come there...

This made me upset, so I moved the yellow in a new tank. This part will be for riffles and cantonensis...

Yep I am thinking that if it is not properly done it will have problems. I'm better to do it properly at the start before trouble occurs.

You can buy white plastic sheets of mesh from craft shops. I used this to put over the holes I drilled into the glass partitions in my tank.

These sheets come in A4 and I think from memory were fairly cheap. I also seem to remember it coming in bigger size sheets. Baby shrimp will still go through it but it is about the same size holes as flywire.

I also got the plastic poster framing and it was easy to make the frame and fitted the plastic mesh in to it. Only took 15 mins or so to do.

I will see if I can find it and show you a picture if you like.

This is a couple of pics. The sheets do come bigger or can easily be trimmed to size. The frame is just a poster frame kit you can also buy at craft shops. Sorry it,s a bit dirty but it was berried under a heap of stuff hidden away. It is easily cleaned with just bleach and water. I took the second pic to give you an idea of the grid on the plastic sheeting. I delibrately cut it to the exact size I needed and just used a rock at the bottom to hold it a bit firmer. In a shrimp tank you probably wouldn't need to do that.
