Hi everyone, Nic here. New to SKF and looking forward to being part of this community.

I have no shrimp at present but once I aquascape my new tank and things start to settle in, I'll be filling it up with shrimp. Looking at getting CRS and yellow cherries!

See you all in upcoming forums.

Cheers guys, feeling the love already!

Funny that I only recently noticed how awesome shrimp were when visited the local fish shop. Didn't know they had been in existence for a while. Had a great time doing a lot of research etc as had the time. I was meant to be studying for my final exams... but got side tracked so many times! Managed to buy a fish tank in my 'spare time', and after my exam tomorrow, will get some substrate and some driftwood and plants. Can anyone recommend the best substrate to get for plants and shrimp. So many out there! Also, I see some people putting down substrate powders/fertilizers etc., is that really necessary?

Thanks heaps guys!

Hey mate welcome to SKF!

As for substrates, Additives etc. It's all really dependent on how far you're willing to go, How much $$$ you want to put in, And personal preferences on it all.

I think when people gain more and more experience running certain setups they like to change/add different things to increase things like survival rates and colouring. I think it pretty much comes down to getting used to a certain way and wanting to challenge yourself and learn again.

I really recommend keeping things basic and simple at the start, And changing and adding things as you feel more and more comfortable with more basic setups.

Most keepers tend to start with Cherries and progress forward with success and time.

But at the end of the day this is your choice, time, money and setup.

Anyways! Welcome to SKF. I'm sure you will find this place very informative and helpful!

ENJOY!

WElcome to SKF nicTT, as previously said by others, take your time and start with the lower end of the shrimp market before heading into the higher $. even though a few dollars may sound cheap per shrimp compared to fish, they are so much smaller and have fairly specific requirements to keep them alive. once you have kept some alive for a few months then you can start to build up your stock.

Hey guys, another question, does anyone know of a supplier of ADA stuff in Sydney. No offense to Boss Aquaria but would like to purchase some in Sydney to avoid freight. Failing that, I am considering 2x 9L amazonia ADA aqua soil + 6L power sand special from Boss Aquaria and was wondering how long will it take to ship up to Sydney from Boss Aquaria. I have ordered my plants so will need them soon.

Thanks heaps for your help guys!

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
