A Question for all

Where dose every one get there Breather bags from now and at what cost?? Where I use to get mine from don't carry any more because of cost pr item .

If they are to costly, I will look at importing from the USA.

Bob I have got mine through group buys which were brought in from USA manufacturer. Boss aquaria sells them - maybe speak to Jay as he would know more about costs for larger numbers. I looked into buying from USA myself but minimum purchase was for 100 and I didn't need that many.

Or you could ask me ...

Remember our Asta groupbuy from Kensfish.com?

Kordon 9 x 16 Breather Bags

(Qty 25) is USD $16.95 and an extra USD$4.45 shipping.

(Qty 50) is USD $31.95 and an extra USD$4.45 shipping.

(Qty 100) is USD $59.95 and an extra USD$4.45 shipping. <- $0.60/bag !!!

(Note: shipping is the same for up to 100 bags)

I haven't placed the order for the asta yet, still waiting on a couple of people  : TEARS :

So if you want it, let me know.

You have my payment details.

Just pick a quantity above, and convert to AUD using 0.7778.

eg

QTY 25 - $16.95+4.45 = USD$21.40 / 0.7778 = AUD$27.50.

<edit3> - you might need to add $10 for local Oz shipping to the above.

Get the 100. Someone else on SKF will need some.

<edit> - other sizes available too.

check it out here. http://www.kensfish.com/cgi-kensfish/sb/productsearch.cgi?storeid=*14884f2aaab140560cc4d786

<edit2> - if you were to buy it separately, instead of with the asta groupbuy, you'd pay USD$45.75 in shipping alone. You'd be saving $41 in shipping.

Serkan,

there is an Astaxanthin groupbuy going on. I got tired of typing astaxanthin and abbreviated it to "asta".

Waiting on one more person to pay for the astaxanthin powder.

If I haven't heard from him by tomorrow morning, you can fill it.

Didn't know that.

Website says nothing about being out of stock.

Bob,

are you in or not?

I'll let you and Serkan decide how many you need.

I can add it to the asta order and you guys pay for the bags and the difference in shipping.

I wouldn't mind adding 25 breather bags. Since no one wanted my culls in Perth I may as well give them to other members.

Can you confirm if I have to add another $10 for postage before I make payment?

Disciple and Northboy has already paid shipping within Oz for the astaxanthin, so I'll change your shipping to parcel post instead, which works out to be another A$2 plus the cost of the bags.

$10 shipping within Oz for KillieOrCory, plus the cost of the bags.

But before anyone transfers money to me for the breather bags ...

KillieOrCory and Northboy,

please call out the quantity and size of Kordon bags you need asap.

I don't want to hold up the asta purchase.

<edit> Serkan said any quantity. So it depends on Northboy.

Thieves mate....... The greedy buggers can smell the money from all the online transactions.

Funny thing is the amount of parcels must be increasing at a phenomenal rate yet they are screaming poor. Go figure.

Northboy, KillieOrCory and Disciple,

I'm going to work out your costs here.

You 3 will be splitting the US to Aust shipping cost of USD$18, which is USD$6 each.

Northboy (200 bags)

USD$120 plus USD$6

Conversion to AUD = USD$126 / 0.764 = AUD$165

Shipping within Aust = A$13 - 3kg parcel post (I don't know how heavy 200 bags and your astaxanthin is going to be, but the 3kg parcel post bag is a safe bet).

Northboy's total = AUD$178.00

KillieOrCory (100 bags)

USD$60 plus USD$6
Conversion to AUD = USD$66/ 0.764 = AUD$86.40
Shipping within Aust = A$8 - small parcel post bag.

KillieOrCory's total = AUD$94.40

Disciple (25 bags)

USD$17 plus USD$6
Conversion to AUD = USD$23 / 0.764 = AUD$30.10
Shipping within Aust = A$2 - small parcel post. Since you have paid for the astaxanthin shipping, this is just the difference of upgrading your shipping to a small parcel post bag.

Disciple's total = AUD$32.10

No problem Bob. Arranging the group buy wasn't hard, but managing payment and chasing people was tricky.

The 75 unallocated bags are currently reserved for Serkan, if he wants it. But if I don't hear from him, or if he declines, then it's open for everyone else to purchase.

I'm happy to pick up the slack if Serkan falls through also happy to go halvies if anyone else is waiting in the wings.  Props to Jayc for organising... IME group buys are often more work for the organiser than they need to be!

Cheers mate.

You're on the list as my first contact if Serkan doesn't contact me by the time these bags arrive from the US.

I really hope he is okay.

Update to say that after a few gravel vacs, front wall scrub, moss / floating plant trim, that the condition seems to have improved.  My current theory is that it is due to waste / debris management, where "stuff" like that brown mulm accumulates in the substrate and behind the HMF filters.  Maybe some tanks can somehow deal with it, but mine can't.  Also another experienced shrimper suggested that maybe those "shell bugs" don't just live on the shrimps but also in this debris.  Maybe this is the reason some tanks fail due to "old tank syndrome" where all they need is a good gravel vac? Also, I am guessing that plant trim helps too because now more of the nutrients and light go into growing algae instead of more plants? Well anyway for this tank I will try weekly water change and monthly gravel vac / plant trim.  For my next tank, I'm thinking of something like an under-gravel system where this mulm can fall down and I vac it out.

Good to have an update and good to hear you are getting shrimplets, so hopefully your colony will continue and you may not get to the point where you have to cull some to stop over population. These type of shrimp only live 12 - 18 months so the adult deaths may be natural? If you have the time I would do weekly 25% water changes, adding the new water via a drip system and do some vacuuming clean of the substrate each week, even if only a different bit each week! See if that helps in a few months and if it does then stick with that regime? It should help reduce any build-ups that may be occuring!

Hello again, much belated update: The tank still has "cycles" of 1-2 month "good streaks" where everybody seems to be doing well, and then a bad streak where the short antenna problem shows up again, and a shrimp dies once every few days.  I am not sure what causes things to go bad, but usually over the course of a few days I will start to see more shrimp quietly standing on the HMF filter, and so I know something is wrong.  Since I am not "doing anything" besides the regular 1-2 week water changes, I just assume that something bad is building up.  Here's a list of things that I've tried that are supposed to be "can't hurt" but didn't prevent the problem either: Dose every other day with Shrimp Fit (very small dose, and the shrimp seem to like it) Sotching Oxydator Seachem Purigen to keep the nitrates lower Keeping the pH below 5.5 with peat Things that I don't do often, so could possibly "reset" the tank back to a good streak, are gravel vac and plant trim, so maybe time to try those again. One other problem I used to have was that sometimes a shrimp would suddenly stop eating with a full or partially full digestive tract that doesn't clear out, and then the shrimp will die within a few days.  I suspected it was one of the foods in my rotation - Shrimp Nature Infection, which contains a bunch of herbal plant things.  I've had this in my food rotation for a few years now and generally didn't seem to cause problems, but I removed it from the rotation anyway.  I don't have a lot of adult Golden Bees at this point so I can't really tell if it worked or not. Overall the tank is not too bad - during the good streaks occasionally a shrimp will get berried and hatch babies with a 33-50% survival rate.  So while there are fewer adults now, there are also a bunch of babies roaming around.  I guess this tank will stagger on, but I really do need to take the time to start up a new tank.  (or figure out the problem)

If that is the offspring, then the parents are unlikely to be PRL. I tend to agree with you. There are very few PRLs in Australia. And any that claim to be needs to show proof. PRL genes have to start as PRL. CRS that breed true after x generations doesn't turn it into a PRL. Neither can a Taiwan bee shrimp turn into a PRL despite how ever many generations. I've never seen a PRL with that sort of red colour. I have on Red Wines and Red Shadows - Taiwan bee shrimps. So somewhere down the line one of your shrimp might have been mixed with Taiwan bees and is no longer PRL. It just tanks one shrimp to mess up the genes of a whole colony.
    • sdlTBfanUK
Sorry, missed this one somehow! The PRL look fantastic and the odd ones look part PRL and part Red wine/Red shadow in the colour. They are still very beautiful but ideally should be seperated to help keep the PRL clean if you can do that.  Nice clear photos!
