I mostly deal with people I've had a long trading history with so trust is already established and so far so good. Sadly another shrimper I know has been done over twice. Thieves specifically targeting his high grade shrimp.... So can only have been someone who had been there before.

Great article @OzShrimp the less info you release until a trust is established is best, however some people you trade with even for a long time the trust never eventuates so keep info to a minimum.

some points in (   ):

"Invest in good quality CCTV in your home covering the points of entry / Shrimp room. Dont skimp as poor quality images are useless to the Police in identifying the culprit.

(Better quality systems allow you to pan and zoom in so you can watch your shrimp on the TV. An added bonus for the price)

* If you have any concerns arrange pick up in a public place and arrive early and wait away from your vehicle. Some people can obtain your details from your roads and traffic authority through your number plate if they try hard enough.

(I always deliver and pick up parking further down the street. Currently I have no need to post or request delivery for equipment or livestock.)

I've taken on some of the tips here already!

In my experience, staffys and 'bull' breeds in general are involved in a large portion of dog attacks. Even chihuahuas are high on the list but they generally aren't as 'serious' which is a shame because the dogs you meet that are socialised well are fantastic dogs!

I know this is an old topic but I would like to add another scary point & yet another reason to not let people into your fish room ?

A good friend of mine breeds L numbers& shrimp - he had a "normal" looking guy turn up to buy 2 younger cheaper type L# he was selling - he was told to bring a bucket but had forgotten but offered to pay extra if a cheap bucket could be provided - when my friend went to get a bucket & rinse it, he came back & transferred the fish into it (left the room for less than a couple of minutes) he gave the guy the fish, got paid & saw him out.  When he returned to the fish room a few minutes later 5 large tanks full of Various L colonies were freaking out & swimming madly & dying before his eyes.  Tanks had been poisoned with unknown substance & there was nothing he could do to save the affected fish.  The guy who bought the fish had targeted the more expensive rarer types tanks, probably in an attempt to get rid of the competition.  

All of the interactions with the buyer were done via Facebook messenger & the account was a fake - he had no contact number for the guy & couldn't do a thing about it - except remember his face & hold a very long grudge.

Definitely get contact numbers for people you're dealing with at least it's a bit of security.

I agree with the posts above about having a Dobermann - I have 2 & they're a great deterrent to keep people from asking to come in ?

I no longer allow people into my house - it's pick up at the door or post only.  But then my house always has someone home & is very secure & I only have crappy fish & cherry shrimp so not a likely target. 

Its a sad world when people stoop so low.

I have a few toranas both restored and in the process of restoring , not even the clowns i work with know my address, my 3 english staffordshires make sure no one comes on my property,and if they do good luck getting over the fence without waking them ,the male is nt the best at the job but the 2 girls are scarily good at hearing things then he wakes up and  hes crazy fast across 100 m  he would probably lick you to death but i wouldnt chance it if i didnt know him,the old female is more protective of my family.than a fat kid is over his tub of ice cream

But i have motion sensor lights that have sd card recoring capabilities  as well as cc tv and btb securlty my cars are in garage attatched to the house and the lowest windows are 2.7 off the ground and my fish room is attatched to them all made out of 8 inch besser blocks core filled so theres no way in from around the back

and if all that fails see if you can outrun a 338 lapau

its a sad sign of the times when you cant even let people see what you got,low life scum out there are starting to outnumber the decent clean living folk and its getting worse

oh yeh and all my fish dealings are either done at my brother inlaws or sisters house and the only thing they know about fish is theyre better crumbed than battered

For anyone who can't afford a CCTV system (like me), you can turn old smart phones and tablets/iPads into security cameras with a 2-way speaker function by using the Alfred app. I'm not sure if there's an Apple version, but you could always download an emulator.

Works like a charm!! We used to use it to watch our dogs while we were out, and yell at them if they barked/howled. It has a pretty decent night vision, too.
