Awesome I only need to run 3 biospon filters and maybe one for a airstone when I want to acclimatize shrimp.

Thanks Inverted. I think the airlabs are a bit big for what I need unless i looked at the wrong thing.

I am running 1 dual sponge, 1 single sponge a 90cm air stone and the homemade filter. I was running 3 dual sponge filters and the home made one on it before though and i have no doubt it could od more

Ok after procrastinating during the week and most of the weekend I spend the putting together a my tank cabinet and a set of shelves I got from ikea for my shrimp "area" lol.

This was the area I was allocated for my computer and shrimp tank.

And after

This is what the shrimp area looks like now. Just refilling the original tank after it's move. I need a few containers to put my powders and what not in to keep things neat and tidy but happy with how it turned out.

Let the cycle begin!

It's been two weeks since I got the tank so I thought I better get cracking and start cycling the damn thing! Lol :D

First thing I did was pretty the tank for the substrate. Initially I had planned to use the stuff I got from aquarist camber to this tank but then shrimpy daddy products became available to us so I thought I would try it out to prepare my tank. After my order was made I thought I guess I don't need this stuff from AC and put it up for sale lol big mistake as the department of agriculture decided to "destroy" the shrimpy daddy products.

So I turned to plan C. First I put some mineral powder.

post-1014-0-52312100-1427032064_thumb.jp

Next I put some bee max

post-1014-0-86383400-1427032128_thumb.jp

Then a layer of normal Ada Amazonia

post-1014-0-08642700-1427032191_thumb.jp

On top of the normal soil I put some more bee max and I also Aqua Eden fulvo balls. Lastly I add the powder soil so that I roughly have about 7-8 cm of Ada Amazonia soil.

Time to flood the tank. I totally Underestimated the time it would take to fill a tank with RO water. I spend about 2 days to slowly fill the tank. Might need to get a fast Ro Unit lol.

post-1014-0-21426600-1427033442_thumb.jppost-1014-0-71845900-1427033476_thumb.jp

While it was still filling up I did a water change for my two footer tank and cleaned its filter. I also set up my cannister filters. The first thing I put was two layers of medium sponge, wool, bio media followed by carbon.

post-1014-0-19379800-1427033933_thumb.jp post-1014-0-45326500-1427034069_thumb.jppost-1014-0-18506300-1427034106_thumb.jppost-1014-0-61060900-1427034144_thumb.jppost-1014-0-88026500-1427034176_thumb.jp

I used the water change water that I had clean my filter in to fill up these cannister filters. I also used the b-4 bacteria! Hopefully this will help shorten the cycle time. Now the filters are hooked up and running all I got to do is wait.

Nice.

Lots of biomedia. Another Marine Pure user. Cool!

What's with the divider in the middle of each section for?

Did you flush the tank with tap water until the water is crystal clear?

I didn't use any tap water Shrimpy Daddy. What I did was fill it up to about 50% a few days ago and let it sit over night I then took out the water to just above the substrate. I then filled it up and the water wasn't crystal clear but it was not as bad as the last pic. The last pic was just after I started the filters, I figured cause I used the water change water to fill up my canister filters that was why it got cloudy again. This morning the water is clear again.

Well when I first started I was asking for ppls advise about good biomedia and you mentioned Marine Pure and I have been using it ever since. Yeah I packed it in tight I was struggling to close the filter haha I think this time I am using my filter to the max by packing the smaller biomedia in the gaps of the Marine Pure.

So the plan with the divider in the middle of each section was to have one side heavily planted and leaving the other side clear with only some drift wood and lava rocks with moss. I figured this way having a divider I wont have the same issues I am currently having in my 2 footer with the dwarf hair grass taking over lol.

Actually to tell you the truth initial the sections to the left were going to be the area's that I would have had my UGF but I decided not to use the UGF and kept the dividers for the above reason.

Thank Ineke.

I cant wait either lol I figure in 6-8 weeks I be able to get my first tb's. I should be able to put some culls in the to test the waters in a few weeks and start moving over most of my current shrimp into their sections in 5-6 weeks. If there are no issues I'll go buy some blue bolts so hard to be patient but I wanna make sure its all good.

I just did some tests and these are the first day results

post-1014-0-45651600-1427113245_thumb.jp

Looks like ph is off the chart which I didn't expect. The ammonia looks right at 4-8. Looks like there is some nitrites showing up already.

I have put the rest of my b-4 bacteria as instructed and put the heater at 28 degrees. Hopefully everything goes well.

Hey mate,

Don't trust API's test kit too much. For example: if you are using aquasoil and you did not flush the water, the pH should be way below 6. If it is showing as alkaline, then something is not right (unless you dumped a lot of strong alkaline buffer in).

Update to say that after a few gravel vacs, front wall scrub, moss / floating plant trim, that the condition seems to have improved.  My current theory is that it is due to waste / debris management, where "stuff" like that brown mulm accumulates in the substrate and behind the HMF filters.  Maybe some tanks can somehow deal with it, but mine can't.  Also another experienced shrimper suggested that maybe those "shell bugs" don't just live on the shrimps but also in this debris.  Maybe this is the reason some tanks fail due to "old tank syndrome" where all they need is a good gravel vac? Also, I am guessing that plant trim helps too because now more of the nutrients and light go into growing algae instead of more plants? Well anyway for this tank I will try weekly water change and monthly gravel vac / plant trim.  For my next tank, I'm thinking of something like an under-gravel system where this mulm can fall down and I vac it out.

Good to have an update and good to hear you are getting shrimplets, so hopefully your colony will continue and you may not get to the point where you have to cull some to stop over population. These type of shrimp only live 12 - 18 months so the adult deaths may be natural? If you have the time I would do weekly 25% water changes, adding the new water via a drip system and do some vacuuming clean of the substrate each week, even if only a different bit each week! See if that helps in a few months and if it does then stick with that regime? It should help reduce any build-ups that may be occuring!

Hello again, much belated update: The tank still has "cycles" of 1-2 month "good streaks" where everybody seems to be doing well, and then a bad streak where the short antenna problem shows up again, and a shrimp dies once every few days.  I am not sure what causes things to go bad, but usually over the course of a few days I will start to see more shrimp quietly standing on the HMF filter, and so I know something is wrong.  Since I am not "doing anything" besides the regular 1-2 week water changes, I just assume that something bad is building up.  Here's a list of things that I've tried that are supposed to be "can't hurt" but didn't prevent the problem either: Dose every other day with Shrimp Fit (very small dose, and the shrimp seem to like it) Sotching Oxydator Seachem Purigen to keep the nitrates lower Keeping the pH below 5.5 with peat Things that I don't do often, so could possibly "reset" the tank back to a good streak, are gravel vac and plant trim, so maybe time to try those again. One other problem I used to have was that sometimes a shrimp would suddenly stop eating with a full or partially full digestive tract that doesn't clear out, and then the shrimp will die within a few days.  I suspected it was one of the foods in my rotation - Shrimp Nature Infection, which contains a bunch of herbal plant things.  I've had this in my food rotation for a few years now and generally didn't seem to cause problems, but I removed it from the rotation anyway.  I don't have a lot of adult Golden Bees at this point so I can't really tell if it worked or not. Overall the tank is not too bad - during the good streaks occasionally a shrimp will get berried and hatch babies with a 33-50% survival rate.  So while there are fewer adults now, there are also a bunch of babies roaming around.  I guess this tank will stagger on, but I really do need to take the time to start up a new tank.  (or figure out the problem)

If that is the offspring, then the parents are unlikely to be PRL. I tend to agree with you. There are very few PRLs in Australia. And any that claim to be needs to show proof. PRL genes have to start as PRL. CRS that breed true after x generations doesn't turn it into a PRL. Neither can a Taiwan bee shrimp turn into a PRL despite how ever many generations. I've never seen a PRL with that sort of red colour. I have on Red Wines and Red Shadows - Taiwan bee shrimps. So somewhere down the line one of your shrimp might have been mixed with Taiwan bees and is no longer PRL. It just tanks one shrimp to mess up the genes of a whole colony.
    • sdlTBfanUK
Sorry, missed this one somehow! The PRL look fantastic and the odd ones look part PRL and part Red wine/Red shadow in the colour. They are still very beautiful but ideally should be seperated to help keep the PRL clean if you can do that.  Nice clear photos!
