journal Warehouse 13; episode 1 (Divided 3ft tank)

Good evening!

 

This one has been in planning for a while now and finally it's starting to come to fruition :)

A while back I purchased a twin tier 3ft setup for bristlenose, but since MTS is taking over I've found myself wanting a divided tank so I could have more sections for my shrimp.

 

I'm like a parent with a newborn at the moment, constantly checking it to see if it's alright, taking pictures of it, planning it's future, lol

With the new tank there's been a slight change to the layout in the room, with the new layout I've found myself wanting to name the room, so I'd like to dub this room and it's contents within as "Warehouse 13"

 

Lighting:: 2x 39W Sylvania Aquastar 10000K bulbs
CO2:: Via three Ista basic diffusers connected to one disposable can
Filtration:: 2x Eheim 2213 Canister filters, 3x Air Driven sponges

Substrate:: 10L Cal Aqua Lab's Black Earth Premium Substrate

 

 

In this pic I'm taking my baby home from the hospital for the first time, one last look back to see if it was sitting comfortably before driving at grandma pace to get home

The holes in the dividers are being plugged with filter foam donated by the ever-generous Twellsy!



This is the position it's going into, I had sold off the previous bottom tank, then dropped the top tank to the bottom. My new tank is taking the pride and joy placement at the top (plus works better for canister filters)
Note the 2ft, stuck almost hidden on the left side



new layout, allowing the 2ft to be accessed and viewed MUCH easier!

Compared to my other tanks, this thing is BRIGHT! All tanks had their lights on in the following photo, I dropped the exposure so the whole picture wasnt washed out

Beemax and Benibachi mineral layer, as all good tanks should have :)

Moss, some plants, some water

24 Hours after initial filling of the tank, parameters are already looking pretty good. In goes some baby gold snails, some malaysian trumpet snails and a Rosey barb (to play the role of canary)

That's it for now, Thankyou for taking the time to read my journal/look at my picture spam! I'll do an update once I've got stock to put in the thing lol, for now due to finances I'm going to have to select from shrimp currently in my colonies and focus efforts, but hopefully in time I'll get some new shrimp to expand my range :) Golden Snow Bees are still the only Caridina types I have currently and I'm yet to dip my toe into TB's at all so that's an exciting step I'm looking forward to!

Kristy no solid plans atm for livestock, I was supposed to get some of 20fus's gorgeous CRS but I messed up with finances and had to pull out of the purchase :( Sorry Garry...
Ever since first getting into shrimps though Bluebolts have been my favorite, so the ultimate goal would to get one of those beauties!

Well time for an update!
The tank is aging quite quickly, biofilm is already developing pretty fast on the glass, the moss is looking less nuked (injected it with excel and H2O2 to treat some bba)
The moss has been split up into the sections, Flame moss (Thanks John) on the left, US Fissiden in the middle, Mini Pellia on the right.

Stock has been added/moved in. Some from the 2ft as I wind it down for a rescape and others from Aquathumb :)

Sweet setup Bryan. Beautiful shrimps. I see apple snails in your tank. Will you be taking them out when they get bigger? I use to have them in my shrimp tanks but i find that they take over the shrimp food.

Thanks John I have to give credit to the people I got the shrimp from though, I'm just lucky enough to have some nice starting shrimp! Though I have to say, I keep checking the tank every 5 minutes to see where the TB's are lol

Yeah the apple snails only get to live in my shrimp tanks while they're young. Then they get thrown into the aquaponics out the back, I find they get too large and start causing issues (moving objects in the tank and uprooting plants)
Even now though they're annoying me, they keep moving a small bit of wood I'm growing Hydrocotyle sp. "Japan" on and I just watched a golden snail land on a Mischling... (climbed the glass, let go and landed where some shrimp were chilling)
I'm thinking of taking them out and just going with Malaysian trumpet snails

I wouldn't put MTS, they will break down your soil real fast from all the moving around. Try ramshorn snails.

Well it seems that juviniles are sneaking through the dividers :/
If it's not just a flaw in the way I've cut it then I might need to find some new material, does anyone have some input? I'd love to know what people are using and how successful it is for them.

Have you thought about SS mesh?

yeah currently looking at going with some #50 Stainless Steel mesh, seems to be the best option for stopping anything getting through (without impacting flow too much)

Biggest issue is because I'm making the change now (and already have shrimp in the tank) I'm going to have to drain the tank long enough for the silicone to dry... But better now than later.

to Make sure I don't get any shrimp confused I've got the middle section clear. Any shrimp that manage to sneak across a section get spotted fast and moved back to their appropriate section.
