Thinking cap time

Which colour group do the Yellows originally come from? I'm breeding up my colony of Blue from Chocolates and having to start from scratch after losing my original colony. I'm getting some nice Blues but also still getting a few Reds but in this last drop I have some very pale babies that I would have thought were Yellow -they are still too small to really tell and too small to get a decent picture. So where did the Yellows come from any ideas???.

The shrimp I am using look like wild type with a blue tinge and stripes- they are definitely from my Chocolate culls and give me really nice blue babies but one of them is giving the Red and pale/yellows but I don't know which one.

Thinking cap indeed!! Great question. What I do know is, this discovery means more tanks for Ineke!! :) For pure research purposes of course!! ;)

I think we need to start calling him Saint Alan!! It's more fitting to his selflessness!!

WELL it works both ways you know, since having my shrimp I have been too busy to harass him (other than getting my shrimp room finished :) ) so he is left to do almost whatever he wants. I still don't understand why we need a hydro-boost on the car or why it had to come from America or why after all the money it cost he needs to spend more because it was made specially for his car but it needs some fine adjustments or suspension airbags so he can have a lift when it's needed out 4W Driving -talked him out of that one as we already have a 4" lift which is now illegal - I mean come on thats money I could use on shrimp!

No you are right he is very very patient about all my shrimp needs:blowkiss: but saint Alan mmmm me thinks not!

LOL just got off the phone from my son who suggested instead of getting more tanks just get another bigger cull tank to match the other one. That would leave me several more tanks to play with in my room . Now I wonder what he wants from me because I didn't even mention anything about tanks mmmm not good something must be brewing and Alan had just been to see him too.:Scratch-Head:

No need to be worried I'm sure!! :poke:

So, before we hijacked your thread, the question was:

Does anyone know where the yellow Cherry strains developed from? Ideas?

According to my research, yellows come directly from wild types, along with reds & chocs. All other colours & patterns are derived from these three colours. I will PM you the dodgy draft that I have had ready for six months, just waiting for the volunteers to finish the work they offered to do for me to make it look more professional. :worried:

Oh BB not you too! I think Eshrimp knows where there may be a cheap one of them too :worried: how do I get even more money out of Alan!!! Not that he holds the purse strings but I never just go out and buy something big without running it past him. I know he loves Eshrimps Marine tanks maybe I could nah that would never work.

I do I do want it but I have empty tanks sitting forlornly in the OTHER shrimp room- nothing sadder than empty tanks :( there is a limit to how much electricity I can us. But Alan is still asking well how much is it? :) AND 1 big tank doesn't use as much as the 7 empty ones would.

Tap is what im using, thank you for the help

Thanks for your input.. the tank is cement and is under our house, its what I use to top up my outdoor pond when it loses evaporation and the shrimp living out there are breeding.  I will certainly look into test kits but to begin with I am just going to cycle the tank with plants.  Thanks again!

It is best to test the parameters of the 'source' water and go from there. Many people use dechlorinated tap water successfully with cherry shrimp (me included), but rainwater or RO water you will need to mineralise the water. I guess it is a bit too early at this stage as you don't have the tank yet, but you may want to ge the test kits so you are ready to go anyway - TDS meter/pen, GH, KH, PH and of course ammonia/nitrite/nitrate for cyclng the tank. I guess you can make life easier when you have the tests by testing the different 'sources' so you can get any minerals etc ready as well, and decide which source is going to best suit cherry shrimps? Rainwater is likely near to RO water so will likely need minerals added, and what is the storage tank/guttering made of, as some metals are toxic to shrimp, especially copper? Sorry, got a bit off original topic. All the equipment you originally listed looks good and well thought out from what I saw but as I am in UK it isn't the same 'stuff' here so hopefully someone from Australia will help with that aspect. I have often got odd groups of fungus growing when setting up new tanks, though not seen it on any shrimp, usually wood or ornaments etc and that clears itself in time once the tank is properly cycled and settled down. If he seems happy and active just keep a close eye on him and see how it progresses (hopefully disappears). Maybe the tank wasn't quite ready for him? I'm not quite sure how quickly/easy it is to cycle/establish when there are no plants, it may take longer as they are usually a part (speed up) of the process I would think, and if you have just got an ammonia reading this week? Keep testing Ammonia/nitrite and nitrate regulary at this point? If the ammonia gets too high it is normal to do a large water change, but that may trigger a molt so only do that if absolutely necessary. Don't overfeed the fish either (common mistake) as that may cause extra ammonia? What water are you using, RO or Tap? Simon

So we have a rainwater tank under our house and I have a pond in the yard - was kind of planning on using rain water or water that has been cycling through my backyard pond, native pacific blue eye fish and native red nosed shrimp out there doing their own thing.   If I am stuck and in a drought then I might have to resort to filtered tap water...  does this sound like a plan?
