Shrimp safe medication

Dable

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I have just fully cycled another tank for shrimp , I had a question though with my current tank that has shrimp in it I just introduced them after the cycle finished, I don't have any problems everything fine with it but I was wondering if anyone puts any medication in the tank say as a precaution several days before putting shrimp into a newly cycled tank just as a piece of mind thing with all the stuff that goes on during a cycle can there possibly be some bits of nasty stuff in the water ??? Or is a cycled tank a indication of a healthy tank ?? Or is it impossible for a infection to b in a fishless tank as there's no living host in there?

IMHO, if the preparation is done according to the recommendation of a buffering soil, mineral powder, RO/Salty Shrimp.....plus there's other "potions" like mosura mineral plus etc.... adding good bacteria via powder etc...and as long as your tank is properly cycled, and nitrates etc... are zero or minimal, and all other water parameters are great, then you're covered....:-), that sounds easy enough ? LOL

Importantly with new set up's, just observe your shrimp's eating and their behaviour/colouration..... a consistent and constant WP is important too.

But do remember, shrimps do die on natural causes too, so don't panic if 1 dies, just do your water test, perhaps a 10% WC, and ensure your TDS, PH & GH in particular is within the zone.

I've never had to add medication into a newly cycled tank.

Medication assumes you want to treat some pathogen. But there is no livestock to treat, and you can't tell what nasties you have. So no point.

The tank will naturally have good bacteria and bad bacteria in it.

Hopefully you have more of the good bacteria, the ones that convert ammonia and nitrites to nitrate.

And less bad bacteria. You can't avoid it. Bacteria is all over the place. In the water, in the air, on dust that settle in and on the tank.

You also won't be able to avoid algae spores or viruses.

The trick is to minimise the bad bacteria by avoiding rotting food or adding contaminated water while cycling.

Then there are some that go the extra mile to try ensuring the tank is seeded with extra good bacteria, so there is less room for the bad stuff.

Fantastic thanks a lot guys :-) ye all parameters are in the zone :-) and nothing looks abnormal :-) was just curious as to if anyone takes the extra precaution and runs a medication through the tank .. But as you all said if parameters are good and nitrites ammonia is 0 and very low nitrates then that all sounds good to me :-) thanks a lot guys :-) I want this tank to be for my selective breeding where I put my best and strongest future shrimp :-)

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
