Maintenance of RO unit

We tend to determine the cleanliness of the water via our TDS/Ec pens (i.e. If the TDS starts rising up, it'll triggers us to chnage the resin/filter etc...), but an alternative is to also replace them periodically, i.e. on a schedule, so to avoid issues with pens giving false readings due to calibration etc... Although this may appear to be a wasteful/expensive excercise, it's a more stringent way to ensure our tanks have the cleanest water possible.

All this will depend on the quality of your tap water, and the level of exhaustion of the filters...etc. In my experience and with my tap water TDS at 350-400ppm, I scheduled a change of my filters every 9 months, and will change the resin once it reads over 50ppm......

A good trick I've learnt is to actually shake the casing holding the resin (or manually stirring it) when the TDS starts rising, as this will change the original/fix "water track" in the casing, and allow the exhausted resin to "move aside".... This will allow your RO unit to produce near 0 TDS again...... Depending on the unit/size, this can be done several times, and saves us some $.

Thanks BB I am at the stage of thinking I need to change my first stage filter although my TDS reading is only 9 but I have an unexplained rise in my GH readings up from 6 to 8. I unfortunately never did a base line water test of my unit when I first got it to be able to compare it. Would a dirty filter cause a rise in GH. Adelaide water has always been referred to as having very hard water although I don't know if that's still strictly true.

Depending on how compacted the resin is packed, it maybe easier to undo the cannister, and manually stir the resin.

Ineke, theoritically the GH out of your unit should be zero, so should be a easy enough process to determine where the rise is from...

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
