Which UV sterilizer?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys was hoping to get a little advice on which UV sterilizer to get, so many to choose from..... My rack is 400lt about to expand it to 700lt,

So I am after something that will be overkill for 700lt, any help would be appreciated:encouragement:

Cheers, Andy

I got the UV twist from Ben, it's the only UVG in Aus(germicidal) I got the 54w but the smaller one will be plenty for that size system, they are pricey but if they save a few shrimplets then it's paid for. Alternatively if you don't want to spend that much just stay away from UVC as they are just clarifiers, not sterilizers. :encouragement:

I was thinking to get uv steriliser but not sure if its worth to do so. I have few problems for two tanks which casualty almost every week ( i even lost one of promising snow white that has bluish near to head area not sure if it is a blue bolt), discolour, inactive shrimp (they are not moving too much) and greenish and purpleish algae on the glass.

Is having uv streliser be helpful to improve shrimp's general well being?

A UV steraliser will only remove/kill bacteria that passes through it (in the water column) in saying that yes it is worth it, especially during the hotter weather and if constantly adding new shrimp (introduce bacteria from sellers water which may turn out to be deadly) without quarantining shrimp first. If you do decide to get one do not skimp out and get the cheap ones, I have purchased the De Bary's UV steralisers, proven to be one of the best and used by many top breeders worlwide.

O my goodness, when I see the price, shocking. It seems De Bary to be the top range. Do you have any recommendation that maybe 2nd or 3rd best uv steriliser?

Guys,

If you are currently experiencing shrimps are not colouring up, I will suggest don't put in the UV Steriliser. I had tested them and found that it causes trace elements to be none absorbable. I think it causes them to precipitate much faster. If your shrimp are already having trace element deficiency (lost of non-white colour), the UV steriliser will make it worse.

I was looking at purchasing a Teco chiller/heater/uv unit for my future set up.

Would it be better to get a separate chiller, heater and uv unit?

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
