INTRODUCING! Light Blue cherries from carbon rilli shrimp :P

Not sure if this has been done before but check it out.

8-10 months ago I purchased some carbon rilli shrimp. A dream come true here are some of them now (there wasn't any culling in this tank as i wanted the numbers up first)

but guess what!!! Among the first few batches of fry I stumbled upon a light blue female. This shocked me as I initially freaked out thinking a blue velvet creeped into this system. But after careful inspection, it was not from the navy and dark blue spots all over her body.

2 months later, she bred ;) behold notice the navy blue spots?

From her first two batches of babies, I found three light blue cherries, two male and one female. Separating them into their own tank, the result was 35-50% of the babies being a light blue and the others carbon rilli. So there ya go. So what do you think guys? Any theories? Any opinions? I’m not sure if this can even be classified as a new shrimp as they are so similar to the velvets, blue rillis and blue fairy. My current understanding is that blue rilli and velvet came from red rilli while the blue fairy was bred by a Taiwanese girl who used wild cherry types. What would this mean about blue cherries that come from carbon rillis???

Does anyone have any knowledge that they would like to share?

Stay tuned for my full blue carbon rilli project ;) unfortunately this project is not as fruitful so far as I have only found 2-3 full blues

i didn't neglect them, except for those extra hugs and cuddles lol maybe thats why they bred so much....so they can get cuddles and share "bananas" with each other >.

They look awesome. :-) Also, I hadn't heard of carbon rillis. They are possibly the coolest shrimp ever though. Do you know if they are available anywhere yet? Good luck with the breeding!

Awesome Gbang, always excites me when there's a strict selective program. Ive not noticed many full light blue cherries off my carbon rill project, but have 2 full carbon rills (pic below).

My selective program is directed toward getting the "rill pattern"….and it's been a loooong road, but a fun one :-)

Awesome stuff Gman, I think the blues would have the same colour genetics as the blues that come from black/choc cherries, this is all very exciting dude. Your blue gene carbons look spectacular dude, I can't wait to see them stabilise, first dibs, lol :victorious:

Light blue cherries are a difficult claim….Ive had blue velvets, blue cherries, carbon blues…and once they're all in the same tank, they can get difficult to identify. The carbon blue's though do have more of a electric blue…

Squiggle- absolutely agree!!! I do think its from blue based blacks too as I have has the odd rilli or two, only question is why isn't there a full navy blue yet if that's the case and just true breeding rilli?

Also I believe a carbon rilli with a light blue body is called a Caribbean blue rilli?

Micheal - yeah mate I only got culls at the moment but they have the potential to develop a full blue?

Woo!!!! So I'm not the only one I do agree the light blues from carbons are quite different from blue velvets rillis and fairies in that thy have that navy blue spotting all over.... But to name it a new shrimp...... Hmmmmmmm I have to say though if you look properly at the video a lot of the navy blue spots seem to be slowly disappearing from the second generation and looking more like the blue velvet rilli fairy

I purchased some carbon rilli juvis not long ago and they are now berried. I am also hesitant to cull yet till I get my numbers up, although I got 2 almost full carbons and a brownish looking female in the same batch (she is berried at the moment also), I was tempted to move her out when she reached maturity but now I will wait to she what offspring she gives out as I am unsure how many I have left from the 10 I purchased.

Tank space is a problem too, I have my carbon rilli in with my CRS and glass shrimp, and the tank I set up to try Zebs in has now got Glass shrimp in it. I also would like to set up a tank with CRS culls...... Never enough tanks!,

I have discussed this with Squiggle a couple of times, there are stages to shrimp keeping:

1- I want to keep them alive

2- I want them to breed

3- I want to keep the babies alive

4- I want to improve the colour/pattern

This then repeats with each 'step up' from red cherries, to coloured cherries, to crystals, tbs, tigers and beyond. Durro made a good point that quite often you will backwards and even have to start from step 1.

progress so far. absolute_shrimp came round to my place a few days ago and lent me his macro lens to take some photos of the light blue carbon rilli tank. he gave me some simple tips too so thanks abso!
