Been selective breeding the green in cherry shrimps for 12+ months, using yellows, blue velvet, reds!....that i identified carrying the colour variant... After F5-6, the colony is starting to produce some weird colours/shades. Recognising temporary colour changes with cherries etc... I have been observing this cherry for the past 4 months, and it has remained this green, and in fact is starting to intensify its colour over the past 2 weeks....

Anyone with a similar program, please do feel free to add to this thread, so that our community can see where this colour variant is heading.... Or if you have a individual cherry with these attributes, whether a temporary colour "fake" or the real deal.... Just interested to know what's out there etc .... Oh and 1st dibs :-)

I thought I had some greens coming through but a while ago Dean wanted some Blue Velvets and I sent them to him- telling him they appeared green - he said once again in the change of ph they turned to Blue Velvet. I have a few more now but nothing as green as yours.

Wow that's a lot different than the lime green ones I'v seen on the net. Would be fun trying to spot shrimplets from them hiding in the moss.

Wow BB, that looks stunning, I can't wait to see what you do with it. Hopefully there will be a true green Neocaridina Hetropoda soon & not just the Caridina Babaulti. Thanks for sharing. :victorious:

Ok time for a silly question. Now obviously it's not as simple as yellow+blue=green but can colours like purple be made or do I need to find a more purple looking gene in my shrimp and go from there. Or would a red/blue cross give me the start?

all my other livestock experience has proven that putting one colour with another colour dosnt really give you the half way point, however cattle would be fairly close in some cases

Androo, yes, the colour achieved isn't via "the half way point"....but via variations of colours...the green cherry I've got is derived from a yellow having a green variation, a choc having a green variation and a blue velvet having a green variation....through several generations, and via a selectively picking the best out of the colony, you attempt to improve the coloration through the selective process...... I have 3-4 that have the same green intensity, and approx. 7-8 with a lighter green tinge.... these are all achieved from 5-6 generations, with 100's of culls etc....

In terms of purple, yes, the variation exist in the cherry family .... just a slow & difficult process.... I was working on selectively breeding them, BUT was slack, and it all turned to the wild form, as I didn't cull and selectively breed them as well as I should have :-(

JohnH - I much prefer your green shrimp, immune to bad WP, etc,, I bet ;)

Androo - I like the vibrant colour of cherries, and more importantly for me, is to eliminate the stripe/pattern on cherries. Colour should be bright, and pattern/marking free. Just my preference...

Been isolating "green cherries" for over 12+ months. Lots of culls, BUT last batch produces 4-5 green shrimplets, and had never notice "green eggs" until yesterday. So super excited to see the outcome :-)

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding?       Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

      You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
