Treatment is the same as Vorticella.
Known cures: Salt bath with aquarium salts. Be careful not to use table salt with Iodine.
Dosage: 1 teaspoon to 1 cup of clean tank water (not tap water).
Duration: 30sec to 1 minute. You might need to repeat this a couple of times until the parasite drops off, so keep the infected shrimp in a breeder or hospital tank (could be another cup of tank water) to allow easier re-treatment.

Another treatment that has been known to work is Genchem's "No Planaria".
Use half the Dosage as per instructions on the packaging of No Planaria.
Duration: 3 days, although you might see the pests disappear after one day, continuing treatment will ensure any unseen parasites are also killed.
Perform a water change at the end of No Planaria treatment.
Watch for ammonia spike and treat if necessary.

Similarly, Benibachi Planaria Zero well also work in killing these parasites.

Another product that might be useful in treating these pests is a product called "Internal Parasite Clear" by Guangzhou Bigfish Aquarium Corp.

I can confirm 'Internal Parasite Clear' works well to get rid of Scutariella. I used three doses, each dose three days apart, and each dose half the rate reccomended on the bottle. The Scutariella were gone on the first dose but I did the extra two doses to be sure. I didnt notice any adverse effects on the shrimp.

Just to update this thread/add more information....

 

I have used Fenbendazole (dog dewormer, 22% Fenbendazole) to treat a *tiny* outbreak of scutariella in a tank. Rather than doing a salt dip on each individual shrimp I saw with the parasites, I chose to treat the entire tank. Worked like a charm! I did a half dose at night, then the other half in the morning, of 0.1 gram per 10 gallons. Made the tank a milky cloudy color, and the shrimp even ate some of the Fenbendazole, but seemed unaffected by it... scutariella were killed off at least, and no further treatments were done.

The liquid suspension sold for goats or Fish-Bendazole will also work, however they have different doses per 10 gallons.

 

As far as ellobiopsidae go... there is hope!!!! This this is a parasite that attaches to the outside of the shrimp and forms "roots" into their carapace (if my understanding of how they grow is correct... unless it's an internal parasite that burrows it's way out... also possible?), we need to treat it like an internal parasite. It may sound odd, but apparently the best method may be medicated food using products like Kordon Rid Ich+! Article here....

I believe two of my blue velvet shrimp have a bacterial infection(opaque and much more quite compared to the others). i originally thought thats just how they were but i'd rather be safe. i plan on using hydrogen peroxide to treat the tank with the instructions listed in this thread, but do i do water changes between each day? and if so how much? i will try to take a picture of one of the shrimp later today

You don't need to do water changes between treatments. Hydrogen peroxide is H202, which has one more oxygen atom than water, which is H2O. Once it breaks down, it becomes water and air. It's kept in dark containers to try and keep it's chemical properties. When exposed to light, it decomposes.

Do your water changes to keep the water clean and free of pathogenic bacteria. But you don't need to do water changes to get rid of h2o2, as mentioned, it breaks down into water.

This is an image of a shrimp ( Palaemonetes paludosus?) from a local pond and a zoomed in image of what might be some kind of parasites growing on the shrimp's exoskeleton.  The growths are white irregular star shaped structures with a red dot in the center. What are they? Are they some kind of parasite or perhaps a normal part of the shrimp? Thanks in advance. This is my first post in this forum and I hope that my post is appropriate for it.

I always thought that was just how a few of the native glass type shrimp looked with the glittery specs and brownish spangles ??‍♂️

@davefoc Firstly, very nice photo in the link you provided. High res, macro shot and is in focus ... really appreciated especially to see what we are trying to diagnose.

I assume this shrimp has been wild caught.

A lot of microorganisms live on shrimp's carapace in a symbiosis ... a close and long-term biological interaction between two different biological organisms, be it mutualistic or parasitic. 

This however, doesn't look parasitic, as that is one healthy looking shrimp.

Since it is on the surface of the carapace only. And should be gone by the next time the shrimp moults. 

This could be nothing more than a type of non invasive fungus or lichen.

Just keep giving this shrimp a clean tank and regular water changes.

Another great thread here. I recently have had a few fatalities in a neo tank, and have had necrosis suggested. Shrimp have lost their colour and have developed a yellowish hue across their backs, larger than the normal saddle line. 

Does this look like the symptoms to anyone else? They don’t appear simililar to the previous images. 

Tank cycled at 7 weeks prior to adding stock. 25 litre nano. 

PH: 7.2

TDS: 330 (treated RO waste)

NH3: 0

NO2: 0

NO3: 10-15

Temp: 20’C

Can you isolate them into a breeder box?

That will allow you to take much closer shots. Side shots.

do you also have healthy specimens to compare with?

I just realised those images were fairly poor as I added them. Both breeders and air is all set up on other tanks atm - I don’t want to risk contaminating my BM’s.

@Kingo, I don't think it is muscular necrosis, as seeing in this picture ...

the head does not have the same muscular tissue, but yet has also got the same discolouration.

It might be something else entirely.

How do these shrimp behave? Are they lethargic in any way? or are they still swimming around.

They don’t appear to be lethargic, and are still grazing. The symptoms are the discolouration and two deaths. Shrimps have been in this tank for 25 days.

Has anyone successfully treated necrosis? I have my first small colony of sunkists for a few months and pretty bummed to have ~ 1 fatality a week due to (my uneducated and over googled diagnosis) of necrosis. I am currently trialing 50% PWC every 2nd day. Params are:

NItrates: ~ 5

Temp: ~ 27

KH - 4

GH - 6

PH - ~ 7.7

TDS ~ 240

Not that I can confirm.

You can try Oregano Oil (Carvacrol), can be bought at health food stores around Aus.

Dilute one drop with 2 drops of water.

Soak food pellets in the oil and drop it into the tank.

Oregano Oil is strong stuff that will kill bacteria. Since it's internal infection, we need the shrimp to eat it.

 

Once you can see it like that, the infection is in it's advanced stages, and the shrimp doesn't have long to live.

 

If you have H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) add 3 drops per 20L every 6 hours for 3 days. See you you go there.

Morning all,

So i thought I might update this thread for any others experiencing necrosis issues. Thanks once again for your advice @jayc! 

 

After 3 treatments of oregano oil, (at @jayc‘s recommended dosage with 3 different foods, 2 x commercial pellets, one of fresh blanched peas) AND increasing my 20% weekly PWC change to 50% twice weekly - my deaths in this tank have stopped. There are still a few w/advanced stages of cell degeneration showing. It appears to have stopped in its tracks for now. 

First berries in 6-8 weeks have just been spied also. Perhaps too early to say if the issue has stoped completely.

 I believe he has Ellobiopsids Disease? This is is a single remaining shrimp purchased from a LFS that imports their shrimp. My most recent batch of high grade reds is locally bred and appear healthier and are hardy.  Thought the photo's might be helpful to others.

Thanks for contributing to this thread with new photos. This is only as good as THIS community makes it.

That shrimp above indeed has ellobiopsids (Ellobiopsidae).

Are you going to attempt treatment?

Can I add your pic to the ellobiopsids post as reference?

@jayc  I removed this poor shrimp from my shrimp colony immediately and euthanized with clove oil, now armed with better information on treatment I wish I had considered treating.  I have 2 week old Bolivian fry occupying my quarantine tank right now and am also raising live BBS for the first time... man those little guys are hungry, I need to run 2 hatcheries!  I am happy to contribute to the forum and meet like minded. ?

Just to give an update.... the "green fungus" is not ellobiopsidae as many people have come to accept, but rather a parasitic algae. Some people have had success treating it using a product such as Kordon Rid Ich Plus soaked food, garlic soaked foods or similar methods. "Lights out" and frequent water changes have helped for some others.

As per new research, it is known as Cladogonium ogishimae

      You may end up losing this batch entirely but then you can start completely fresh and get the aquarium set up right for the next batch of shrimp! If you do any large water changes then try and add the new water slowly, either dripper or some other way. You should get yourself a TDS meter (as JayC above), they are cheap and readily available. You should always use a GH tester kit as well with shrimps, if you do the 50% water change that should halve the GH so you should get a reading after that, or if you can get a local fish store to test it for you that will give you an idea of the GH. If your water supply is as hard as it appears it may be you will need to mull over how (or even IF) you want to keep shrimps as that may mean using RO or distilled/bottled water and buying a proper shrimp specific remineraliser? That will be quite expensive but you won't then have to mess about adding crushed coral/eggshells etc, but only you can decide whether you want to do/spend that much etc? If you live somewhere that gets a lot of rain, then you can use rain water? Also, as JayC states, you need to know what you are using/adding to the water and aquarium, ie fertilizers, rocks. Unless you have very exotic plants you shouldn't need any fertilizers. Just as a note, we have come across quite a few experienced fish keeprs that have this sort of start off issues with shrimp. Shrimp are more difficult than fish, and the aquarium and water etc need to be ready and within the required parameters before getting the shrimps. Usually people jump in, get the shrimps before everything is ready/sorted. Hopefully though you will keep at it, or if this lot die you will have another go and we can help you get it sorted?

      These are all classic symptoms of shrimp moulting problems.   Again, another high GH symptom. High GH not only causes harder carapace (shell), but it also makes eggs harder. When the egg is harder the male finds it more difficult to fertilise the eggs.   That's a worry if you can't get a good GH reading because that is going to be most likely issue right now for you.   Because snails don't moult.    If you dont already have a TDS meter, I suggest getting one asap. It's another test to narrow down your water parameters, and not have to trust one test by it's own - in this case the GH test kit. I would wager your water parameter is too high in dissolved minerals - likely from the tap water source, fertiliser dosing and/or any rocks/crushed corals you might have in the tank. To remedy this, you need to start doing water changes with RO, distilled or rain water immediately. I would do a 50% water change with RO water asap. Then look for sources that increase GH in the tank and eliminate it - fertilisers, rocks, crush corals, shells.    It's difficult to save a shrimp who's carapace is already too hard, but hopefully any younger shrimps will benefit from the water change and the reduced GH.   Good luck and keep us updated.

      United States. I have tested my tap water; it yields the same results. GH: ??, KH: 3, pH: 7.8. I cannot say for sure if my GH test is faulty or not, the expiration is until 2023. It's more of a twitching, then stasis. I have one shrimp that's having a hard time balancing itself, but it's swimmerets and mouth keep moving in attempt in getting back up. I allowed it to stick to my sponge filter. The tank is cycled. I used established media. Readings would not show 0 otherwise. I do use EI Dosing, half dosage recommended for a 20 gallon. It has been said on other forums that it does not affect shrimp, but I stopped dosing to isolate variables a week ago. No CO2, that's too costly for me, hah. I drip acclimated the shrimp for 2 hours, 1 drop per second. I tested for copper in my tank, nothing. Funnily enough, my mystery snails in my community tank don't seem too affected by it.

      Sorry to hear you are having a problem! Where are you based in the world? Can you test your tapwater GH/KH/PH? Best to know what the source water is, dechlorinated (if required) before you have ADDED anything. Are you sure the GH test is working and not old, or already activated/contaminated somehow? The other parameters seem ok! If the GH is as ridiculousy high as you say then I expect the shrimps would have problems molting (they may be twitching to get out of the old shell), though generally twitchy behaviour is usually down to some sort of toxic poisoning or the aquarium not being properly cycled? Are you using any plant fertiser or CO2?  Did you drip acclimate the shrimp over many hours before adding them to the aquarium? They are much more sensitive than fish to changes in water parameters etc. You could end up killing more of them by moving them so I would hold off from that at the moment!

      Hello all, I am new to the forum, although experienced at fishkeeping, I am relatively new to shrimpkeeping. Let's start with my issue. I had started a colony of 18 juvenile cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) in a 20 gallon long as of last month. I solely use tap water and change 5% per week. They are the only inhabitants alongside a single juvenile Malaysian trumpet snail. Today the numbers have been reduced to 9. The deaths did not start until the shrimp turned into adults, where they have struggled, twitching as if provoked, becoming lethargic, and eventually flipping over to their side and dying. Only the ones on the verge of death exhibit this behavior, whereas the rest simply graze on as usual. I measured my parameters today - my tank has been established for two months as of now and is densely planted. They have never bred despite being of adult size and having visible saddles. Never an issue with molting. Ammonia: 0 ppm, Nitrite: 0 ppm, Nitrate: 0-5 ppm || pH: 7.8, GH: ??, KH: 3 I cannot get a single good read off API's liquid GH test. I have dropped beyond 30+ and gave up as I knew the numbers were already extreme. The thing is, I need a temporary, inexpensive solution to keep my shrimp safe. I believe by the time I order supplies, the colony would already give. I was planning on moving the colony to a 5.5g, barren with my floating plants and mosses, using just distilled water, Seachem Equilibrium (only GH additive I own) and crushed eggshells (potential source of KH). Possibly crushed coral to substitute for the lack of any real mineral additive. I did not believe that high GH would possibly become a problem, and I am fortunate that the strugglers are still alive. If anyone has a solution to this problem, or approve of my plan of action, please let me know. TIA
