Cardinal Shrimp

Heard rumours that Caridina dennerli aka the cardinal shrimp have made it into the country.

Without naming who has them, when or where, can anyone confirm that they have personally seen them?

I'd love to start a tank with them as well. Would at least suit the stupid high pH Sydney tap water instead of the constant battle to lower it.

Ive heard people claiming to have seen them 1-2 years ago, but apparently they are notoriously hard to keep so im wondering whether said cardinals are still alive??

Saw some recently for sale at a pretty cheap price of $300 each.

Dont know if anythiy came of it though.

They've actually been in the country at least 3 years, I saw pictures of these from a young keeper a while back and was tempted to keep but didn't. So yeah, they are most definitely around. As to where this last group have come from I have no idea myself.

There was work being done on creating a paper on how these guys would not affect the Australian Environment, thus legal to import. Don't know how this report went or even if it has been completed.

Yeah but like i said in my previous post... they may have been in the country 3 years ago, but are they still here? For all we know, they could've all died!

on the other hand the owner could have kept it to himself and bred them successfully in his backyard and made them available for other keen enthusiasts.

What steps are taken to try and legalize any exotic shrimp? Where would you start?

A paper had been started by about five keen enthusiasts, one of our favorite locals too, but not sure where it got too? Maybe they will advise soon! I would be keen to find out what needs be done to make these and TB legal.

Always a possibility. Sure we would of heard about them before now though.

I have not seen them personally but I was offered five males for free as the person who had them lost all the females & saw no reason to keep the males cause he wouldn't be able to breed them & was getting rid of them for that reason. :encouragement:

DG17, we actually kicked of the paperwork a couple of years back on ************ for this exact species so you may want to have a look back over there to contribute. There has been a tonne of work done already but any assistance will be appreciated and it'd be a waste to start again.

The guy I know that had them was breeding them, and doing quite well but he was a pretty smart cookie also, really nice guy and a good breeder, lately though he's been extremely quiet however he's an accountant and it is end of tax year so he may be snowed under. The pictures I saw at the time showed some beautiful small shrimplets and I'd trust him completely, he's whom I brought my Sunkists from. Like I also said, I don't know who this breeder is or where he's come from. People who pop up out of nowhere selling new shrimp and such I tend to avoid and watch from the sideline, and lately that's happening quite a bit.

I actually joined in the import report writing towards the end and i believe it is very close to completion.

The things that were lacking when I last sent my edits to Dave were Impact Assesments that you need a special program or some indepth geographical knowledge to ascertain.

I'll ask Dave about it.

Awesome news that it is almost completed. Once it has been completed for one species then maybe TB next. Fingers crossed their water parameters are nothing like any natural water bodies in Australia.

I believe it can take up to 3 years once it's been submitted for the first time for anything to happen, so don't hold your breath, but we will wait and see.
